Many of you know that I am scheduled for surgery for October 20. My wife has explained my surgery to my 6 year old daughter Alana. Almost every night for the last week Alana has asked to see my stomach and if I have had the surgery yet. Today she came downstairs with a puzzle of the human body and asked which part they are going to take out. I pointed to the colon and she removed it from the puzzle and said “like this?”. She is so sweet that I had to share this with everyone.

Paul, first of all, your daughter is a real cutie and sounds like a delight! Second, talking about surgery as you are with her will make recovery much easier. Having support is very important. Kids are so accepting and understanding. Hey, maybe you have a future doctor in your family!

Thanks everyone. It is even more precious to me because my daughter is developmentally delayed. One assessment we had a few years ago recommended that we hold her back one year at school before grade one. She is in grade one now and the school doesn’t agree with holding her back just yet. They are trying to get her an educational assistant. Alana has had speech therapy since she was 2 years old.

Its amazing how kids can make these issues so much easier to handle.  I just recently had my gallbladder taken out through laparoscopy, so I have four incisions on my abdomen.  Every day my toddler son would "check my boo-boos."  He'd touch them and say, "They're gettin' better!"  And in the beginning I still had that yellow stuff all over me that they use for surgeries, and he'd say, "Not so yellow anymore."

Little things like that put a smile on my face and made the whole thing so much more bearable.

Best of luck with your surgery.  I hope you have a quick recovery!
