You may laugh if you want to, I am just so paranoid w/ this crazy disease.  But have any of you had any problems when you have had to have fillings?

no but let your Dentist know. I told him I was on pred and for how long and that my teeth were sensitive to cold. Don't know about fillings, can you wait until you have been off of it for a few months?
Beth, 33 ~ hoping to taper pred successfully, wish me luck!

Off of the meds? I can't see them taking me off of my meds for a while as I am still in my flare. And yes, your right, I did give him the list this morning when they cleaned my teeth.

What kind of problems, like UC related problems??
The last time I went to have fillings, I had to go for three separate appointments so they wouldn't numb my WHOLE mouth at once. The whole experience was uncomfortable, and then when the Novocaine wore off that night I was in SOOOO much unbearable pain it was unbelievable. I told the dentist about it at my next appointment and he said it was just because it was a deep filling, but I had the same problem with the not so deep ones. He refused to believe the pain I said I was in and wouldn't prescribe me anything to help, and I tried everything OTC and nothing worked. So needless to say I'm not going back there ever again.

But now I'm terrified of the dentist and two of those fillings have cracked so I'm freaking out :(

Don't know if that's what you were wondering about but it's all I got! I don't remember if my UC acted up anymore than usual after that, all I could think about was the mouth pain.

Also, I'm almost positive I was on pred at the time so I'm not sure if that had anything to do with it or not.

I suppose I was just wondering if it could possibly make my flare worse.

Your comments are greatly appreciated!

My flare got worse after I had a root canal in June.  I had a dose of amoxicillin first, so that could have contributed.

I felt bad enough that I have been putting off going back for another filling though.  Hopefully your dentist will be UC sensitive.  Mine doesn't seem to have a clue about this disease.

Nope never had a problem (Uc wise) from the fillings, root canals, crowns or even wisdom teeth extraction. Though sometimes when I am flaring, I do have an increase of symptoms but that is because I have to pre-medicate with antibiotics due to my MVP. So I am sure that is what causes the issues for me.

Seems to me that ever since being diagnosed in 98, whenever in a flare, my teeth seem to bother me for some reason or other.  I have had cavities, abscesses, etc when on prednisone.  I asked the dentist if taking prednisone had in some way contributed to this and he said..."nah, just a coincidence."  Some coincidence!  Last month I developed an abscess under a cap (the dentist I had before this one never did root canal before he put on the cap).  I had to take Cipro, of course it happened on a Friday evening.  The dentist saw me on Monday and did the root canal.  At the time, I was off the pred for two weeks after a looooong time on it.  Boom, flared up again and been on the prednisone ever since with a slow taper.

My current huge flare came from using amoxicillin after a tooth implant.... Antibiotics unless used for a specific IBD purpose are evil, and I nwill now avoid them (unless I use them specifically for IBD) unless it is a matter of life and death.

I am a dental assistant, and I noticed that while on Prednisone, my teeth were very cold sensitive. Of course I was freaking thinking the worst, but as soon as I came off that poison my teeth got better... I'm still waiting for my sore joints to catch up but I would not get a filling if at all possible while on this stuff. I need a filling myself but since it isn't too deep I opted to wait until my immune system could handle it. My dentist/boss agrees with me until I feel my system is ready. Hope this helps
