They were high in the hospital but they thought that was from passing a galstone or the attack itself. Now I went for my yearly last week and they called and told me to go repeat my blood work that my liver and several other counts were way up again. What would cause this ? I have low grade fevers some nights like 99.5 or so for no reason.
They decided not to take the galbladder out since they couldnt see the cause of the attacks on the mrcp scan and the pains have stopped so Im confused as to wahts going on with me.
They did an ultrasound, cat scan hida scan and Mrcp scan and they looked at the Uc or chrones and didnt seem to think they were the source of the problem.
Anyone have any ideas?   I dont drink at all .

Many medications can put a strain on your liver. Are you taking any Rx besides the asacol?

I get copies of my bloodwork results from my doctor so i can see which specific tests are out of normal range and how far out of normal range they are.

Could it be from a virus? My liver counts went up when I have mono which is caused by Epistien Barr Virus.

Apparently, unusual liver results are quite common with UC. I guess with some of your other indicators being up they just want to keep a closer eye on you. Sometimes it's weird how this disease goes, and they do seem to do one hell of a lot of tests on bloods etc. It's great that you don't drink, cause that's always a bummer for your liver to handle if you're otherwise unwell.
Wishing you well.

What were your enzyme counts? And which one's were high? My AST and ALT skyrocketed but went down considerably in one week. They are still slightly elevated. I see you have frequent fevers. I am guessing you might take alot of Tylenol whick can affect the enzyme counts so tell you Dr. about this.

     Mom,
Did you say 13 times a day????  WOW!  Or do you mean 13 pills?  I take nine Colazal a day and the doctor upped my 6MP from 50 to 75 mgm a day along with my prednisone when I saw him yesterday achieve remission after tapering off the pred.  So far, I haven't been able to do so with the 50 mgm.  My WBC was 7.1 and usually it is 3.5, therefore, he feels I can safely get by with the 75 mgm.  When I was in the hospital, my lipase was over 400 and Lipase over 200.  He immediately took me OFF the 6MP as he felt it caused pancreatitis.  However, after five days in the hospital my results returned to normal.  Now, it was either due to the terrible inflammation or some fluke in the lab.  Last week my amylase was 50 and Lipase 27, go figure.
Looking over my Hepatic Function Panel now....everything A-OK.
62 yr old granny. South Jersey
Diagnosed with ulcerative proctitis in 1998 in hospital
Hospitalized (2nd time) in May 2008
Still flaring.   Afraid that I am pred dependant.  Back on Pred 40 mgm for five days, then taper.  Other meds...Colazal, 6MP, Nexium, Cort enemas, Canasa suppository, Benicar, Toprol xl, water pill.
Calcium, Probiotic, Flaxseed oil capsule, multivitamin with Iron
Also have osteoporosis and high blood pressure
Remicade NOT an option. Not a candidate for surgery yet..says surgeon.

Christine, Are Lipase and Amylase part of AST and ALT or is that different. I do not see Lipase or Amylase on my test.

Thanks

AST and ALT are two of the liver tests (it is possible to do other additional liver tests too).  Lipase and Amylase are pancrease.  I get copies of my bloodwork so I can look stuff up myself if something is outside of the normal range, its easy to find info about typical blood tests on the internet.  Also I can then compare over time and see what goes up or goes down in my bloodwork corresponding with the times that I am increasing or decreasing my meds.

I am guessing mom4321 meant she now takes 1 pill 3 times a day, only 3 pills total (in her sig line looks like she previously took 2 pills 3 times a day - total 6).  I guess if she did take 13 asacol that wouldn't be outlandish, I take 12 a day myself (4 pills x 3 times a day = 4800 mg).  Some doctors say what I am taking is the maximum, although we had some discussion here a while back where it sounded like a few people were taking a bit more than the 4800mg asacol.

bile duct issues and UC can run hand in hand.  I am currently having an issue with it as well.  I have a tenative diagnosis of PSC.  Probably best bet for more research on these issues would be the liver disease section.

UC since age 22, now 27.  Several huge flares since then.

Currently tapering prednisone(35 mg from 80 mg).  Also just starting 6mp again and lialda.   I definately am not liking these drugs.  Maybe surgery one day?

Test is called ERCP. They treat you for the gag reflex and more or less knock you out for the procedure.

No its not conclusive yet.  They only found an infection of my bile ducts while i was in the hospital.  The doctors in there were pretty nonchalant about explaining what that even meant at the time.  Now that I am out, my current gastro is starting the testing for me beginning with blood work to see if the liver levels are elevated, and then go from there.  Hes somewhat concerned, but right now its too early to tell anything and all i am doing is researching.

I am hoping bile ducts can 'just' get infected and it not be PSC!!

There has been a fair amount of discussion on ERCP here. I would start with a search here on the board. What specifically do you want to know?

I was wondering how much Vit. D you were taking.  My son developed pancreatitis from Imuran.  After ceasing the Imuran ,his pancreatitic enzymes came down.  about a month after that, Vitamin D started raising his pancreatitic levels again.  He was taking  1000IU of Vit. D plus 400 in his multivitamin and 400 IU more from his calcium supplements.  That amount of Vitamin D was toxic for him.  I was just asking because it might affect your liver also.
