Last Saturday, a friend of my son's was hit by a car.  He was hit by an elderly lady and received multiple injuries including a fractured skull.  He was air lifted to a major hospital where he was pronounced brain dead.  The parents had to stop the machines.  I didn't know this kid personally but I see what his death is doing to my son as well as one of my son's friends - the boy that died was his best friend.  They have grief counseling at the high school for the students that knew him.  But I guess what is depressing me is that that could've been MY son (or even my daughter).  It happened just down the street from me.  It has really hit home ya know???  I just feel so bad for the family that lost their child.  This boy was on the varsity soccer team and tonight they are having a memorial game for him.  My son is going as well as all his friends.  It just isn't fair that this 16 or 17 year old has lost his life - a life that has yet to be lived all because this lady didn't look before she made that left hand turn.

Anyway, I just had to get that out and off my chest.  And I consider you all friends so I hope you don't mind.

So very sorry to hear that sad news Sherry.  Please accept my condolences.  My heart goes out to that young man's family and to your son and his friends.
A few years ago, my husband and I were returning to our car with our grocery cart and an OLD man (86) hit his accelerator instead of his brake and hit my husband, bypassed me (and I was on the other side of my hubby) and hit the guy walking next to me, threw him onto the hood of the car and ran into the side of the supermarket.  Thank GOD my husband was not badly injured, nor was the young man next to me.  Although if he hadn't jumped onto the hood he would have been crushed.  We could all have been killed.  I am all for testing these people after age 75 or sooner.  They complain about teens on the road, but I think some of these old folks are more of a hazzard.
I would NEVER move to FL!!!!

Yes, I am all for testing the elderly too. about 8 years ago, a young girl (about 10 years old) was struck and killed by another older lady just down the block from me. I live a block away from a major road. That hit home as well. Plus I read all these stories about these elderly ladies and men mistaking the gas and brake and running into people and buildings. I think the laws need to change and soon.

Red, I'm so sorry you're all suffering through this. It is scary to realize how quickly a life can be cut off. I can't even bear to think about losing my daughter. All my best to you and your son as you come to grips with this devastating loss; I second Sunshine's big hug to you both --

I'm sorry Sherry for the loss of your son's friend. It really is a scary thought that it could have been one of your own. I agree with testing for licenses...but my Dad who turns 84 on Friday just had his "test" at the DMV and he passed. Now how am I supposed to handle that one? I really don't think he should be driving. And on the other side of the coin; I was in a bad accident back in June caused by an 18 year old that lost control of his car...so I suppose you just never know. I'm so glad to hear they are giving the kids some grievance support; that's the best thing that can be done for those kids. (((((Hugs)))) to you....and the kids.

It is never easy!  But when it gets that close to home - it is harder.

My son, who is 44 now had an accident on New Year's Eve when senior in HS.  His girlfriend was driving and my other son and friend in back seat. They did not get hurt.

A drunk young man turned in front of them and they hit him broadside.  The young man laid in the snowbank while the ambulance was coming - frozen snowbank about 0 degrees.  He as unconscience.  My son sat with him until the ambulance came - said he couldn't see him alone.  Anyway, the young man (whom my son did not know) died later in hospital.  Took a while and some talking about it - that helps - for my son to understand these things happen.  I met the young man's Mother a few years after and she wanted me to thank my son for staying with her son!

God Bless that family!

A horrible reminder of how fragile life is.

This summer a good friend of my brothers' died after hitting his head longboarding. My mom, who watched them grow up and play hockey together, is still having a hard time knowing that another mother lost her son.

It's okay to feel the way you are feeling.

Isn't it amazing that the majority of us has either been in an accident and/or know someone who has?? Yes, it is very sad for everyone - I think more so since this was a child. And btw, I stand corrected, this boy was 14 years old and was hit by a 55 year old woman. I was getting the story second hand from my son but I looked it up on the online observer page. But I still stand by that a ruling should be in place for some sort of action against older drivers. Yes I too have had 2 accidents involving older people and I even was rear ended by a drunk driver (pregnant with my daughter no less). Thanks for the hugs. I will let my son know that you all are thinking of him as well as the family of this child.

about 9 yrs ago one of my daughters friends (a boy that lived behind us) was riding his bike and got hit by a van right in front of my house, I went running out there, I saw the whole thing from my living room window and was horrified, then his mom came running from her house behind us freaking out of course so I had to try and calm her down, run into the house and get a blanket to cover her son, to keep him warm, and he'd come to and then back out again...it took forever for the ambulance to arrive because we were a fairly new area so that didn't help...luckily though this boy (9 yrs old at the time) was okay, a broken leg and arm was the extent of his injuries by major luck...so you're right red it's pretty scary the things we've experianced.

There is nothing I hate more than drunk drivers. It is the most selfish crime out there. Many say no child molestation is and I say while horrably tragic, and clearly criminal, those are caused by mental deficincies... something that is just not right in the head. Drunk drivers on the other hand make a conscious choice to drink and pick up there keys. My grandfather was killed by a drunk driver and one of my best friend's fathers was too. There is a special place in hell for them.

Red - sorry for you and your sons loss.

I lost my sister in an accident when I was 10 she was 14. that has been 42 years ago and it is something you never get over, you just learn to go on. I know my mother has never been the same sense that horrible night. It has to be the hardest thing to ever go threw to lose a child. you almost lose the whole family when it happens, know one functions in the same way after something like that happens. My condolences go out to the family and all that knew him.
