We finally got my flare under control in July with 6MP.  Back in December I thought I had blood in my urine but the culture came back negative.  Then in April at my yearly OBGYN visit, they found blood in my urine but the culture grew nothing.  A few weeks ago my urine was a brown/orange color and I was having kidney soreness.  I went to be tested for UTI.  Took one round of antibiotics but it was no better.  Again, blood in urine but culture grew nothing.  That's when my OBGYN decided I may have a kidney stone.  Sure enough, after having the dye test, there's a 1cm stone high in my right kidney.  When I started researching on the internet about causes of kidney stones, I ran across imflamatory bowel disease.  I was totally unaware of this.  I did not know that having UC made me more likely to have a UIT or kidney stone.  I don't see the urologist until Oct. 15th but from what I've read online, a 1cm stone is not passable and they will try to break it up using sound waves.

Has anyone else had trouble with kidney stones associated with UC?  What did they do for you and what do I have to look forward to?

Haven't had one in 19 years. I really push fluids now. I did have Lithotripsy twice. No big deal, They had me on Morphine smilewinkgrin The machine just pounds the crap out of the spot until it pulverizes the stone, then you pee sand shocked The sensation was like someone taking one of those big rubber bands and snapping it on you hundreds of times a minute. No pain tho.

I JUST passed a 3mm stone!!! I knew i had it after a trip to the ER for abd. pain. So, it was not a total freak out once the pain hit from it. I had to go to the ER as i could not treat the pain at home and was admitted for 24hr for pain control while i passed it. Thankfully it passed fast.  I have had 4 stones pass. I have only had two since my UC was active. I have not been to a urologist but by my dad's urging (we have family history of stones), i will be going soon.  I have not had any blasted, sadly, had to pass all 4 of mine! LOL

anyways, update after u meet w/ ur doc, i am interested to see what they say about relation to uc.

Doesn't sound fun. At least they will give pain medicine.

I have a big 1.5 cm stone near the ureter of my left kidney, it has been sitting there for a decade or so. Lately, discomfort and some discoloured urine are making me think it may be time soon to say goodbye to it.

21 years of UC which started after quitting smoking. In and out of flares which are usually triggered by antibiotics. Latest issue is endless diarrhea without blood or mucous.

4 years ago I had to have emergency surgery to remove a 3mm stone that was stuck in my ureter. It was never going to pass and had to be removed due to blocking the flow of urine. I had a stent put in for 2 weeks to let me heal and bypass the urine.
Since then I have had 3 ESWL's (ultra sound shock waves to break up additional stones).
I see my urologist every 3 months to check on the size of my stones
I have 3 stones now that are 4mm or larger.
He feels it is best to leave them alone since they are not causing any trouble ...yet
Sometimes when you go in to break them up - you still end up with pieces that are too large to pass
The only time my stones bother me lately is when I am ovulating each month
My though is...unless it is causing pain....let it be

Thanks Michelle! I had no idea that leaving it alone was an option. From what I've read, it seemed like they would want to get it out so it would not cause further damage. After thinking back, I think I may have had this one almost a year. It could be longer and I never noticed it. I hurt sometimes but mostly don't hurt. Sometimes my urine will look normal but it's dark brown/orange first thing in the morning and late afternoon when I haven't gone to the bathroom in a while. My sympathy goes out to everyone that has ever had to pass one. I hear it's the worst pain ever!
I was wondering if the 6mp could have anything to do with it. I am always worried about what damage it could be causing. Looks like not everyone with kidney stone issues takes 6mp so maybe there is no connection.

After giving birth to 2 children....my stone was more painful than being in labor.  I never knew I had it until it was stuck. The pain was so severe because it was impacted - it was never going to get thru the ureter.

I was just diagnosed with UC in August and my dr. said that there is a correlation between stones and colits.

As I said before... I know I have stones now that I will never be able to pass and will end up having to have them surgically removed if they try to get out.

My Dr. has given me the choice to have them removed or "blasted" but again, the ESWL is not a precise treatment since a 4mm stone like mine could break into a 3mm piece and we know I still cannot pass that.

I feel that if its not causing any significant pain or urinary infections...leave it alone

Also...because I have stones....I will ALWAYS test positive for blood in my urine

The BEST thing to do is...DRINK DRINK DRINK

Water is best but any liquid will keep the kidney hydrated and flush them

My urologist suggests adding lemon juice (the bottled kind) to water since the acidity of the lemon juice can help prevent stones....will not shrink ones already there but will help new ones from forming.

Take Care

The incidence of kidney stones is higher with UC (its never just one thing, is it - like the coyote in the Road Runner cartoon;  he always gets slammed twice).  I have had two episodes close together of what I and ER doctors thought were kidney stones.  Nothing showed up on the scan so either they were too microscopic to see or something else.  I have noted, however, that at higher doses of oral Salofalk (mesalamine) I easily experience urinary tract discomfort, sometimes pain.  My GI just shrugged her shoulders at this.

pan colitis (diag: Nov 05)
Meds: salofalk7 to 10 tabs/day depending on disease status; imuran 75mg/day; entocort when flaring; cortifoam when flaring; pantoloc; VSL#3; vitamin D and calcium; fosomax

When the urologist got my x-ray showing the 1cm stone, he had his office call to move my appointment up to Tuesday. I'll see him Tuesday morning and they said they "blast" on Tuesday afternoons. They didn't want me to have to wait another week. I understand that if they decide to try to blast it I'll get pain meds. but what about passing the "sand" little pieces? Is that painful? I stay at home with my little girl and my sister will keep her Tuesday but I have no idea if I'll be fine to keep her by myself on Wednesday. Will I still be in pain or passing stuff on Wednesday or will I be fine? What has been your experience?

lack of magnesium in the diet can cause kidney stones.

The blasting is not painful since you are put under anestesia for it.
I wake up each time very nauceous
You will have bleeding and soreness afterward....like someone beat the hell of your kidney
You will be uncomfortable but I think okay to be home with your daughter
Just dont plan on doing much....take any pain meds they give you...no need to be at home in pain!
The sandy pieces are not painful to pass... they may ask you catch them in a strainer to see what compounds make up your stone. It's actually pretty cool to examine them....they truly are hard like a stone
You will have some burning when you pee (kind of like a UTI) but like I said...keep up the pain meds that they are for!
It's not bad at all....you will be fine!
I had 3 done in a month!
My dr. is hesistant to do them to me again because the ESWL (blasting) will damage kidney tissue and can cause elevated blood pressure.
It is a great treatment but not want you want to do too often
Good Luck and keep us posted!

Thanks SO much Michelle! I'm usually pretty out of it on pain meds so I guess I'll have to see how I handle the drugs. My GI doesn't normally test liver/kidney functions like another thread mentioned today. I wonder if that could have shown there was a stone earlier than we realized.

You have put my mind more at ease! My daughter was breech so I had a C-section and never any labor pains. I was worried about having to "birth" stone pieces. I can deal with soreness. That's what I'm having now and I'm really hoping it doesn't decide to move down or try to come out before I see the doctor on Tuesday. Everyone's experiences have been a world of help! I'll let you know how it goes and I also want to find out if there could be any way 6MP is causing trouble in my kidneys.

I had 2 bouts of kidney stones. The first one got stuck, and I had to have surgery. Worst pain I have ever experienced. I told my husband that if we would have had a gun in the house I would not be here, that is how painful it was. The second we found early and I was able to have the lithotripsy on it. Much better. DIdn't hurt really at all. They put me on morphine while I was in the hospital. Sent me home with vicoden. Only took it to sleep that night, thenby the next day was feeling fine. No big deal. I would highly recommend getting the lithotripsy, and not chance it getting stuck in your ureter. Also, after my second round of stones, I insisted on a 24 hour urine test to see what we could do. I also insist on getting x-rays every 6 months to ensure that if I do develop another stone that we catch it early and I don't have to go through the pain of getting another one stuck. I am on a potassium/citric acid pill to dissolve the stones and prevent them from forming and I am on a diuretic to flush my system out. More pills, I know, but better than going through that pain again. So far, so good. Best of luck to you and I hope it all goes well.

Sorry it has taken me so many days to get an update out there. We saw the PA on Tuesday morning and he sent us straight over to the hospital to meet the doctor. He said it's a traveling machine and if I didn't go right then the machine would not be back in my city till next Tuesday. I was a nervous wreck but was fine after the put me to sleep. As soon as I woke up from the blasting I gelt desperate to go to the bathroom. The doctor had inserted a stint that he wanted left in till Thursday. It drove me CRAZY!!!!! I felt like I had to pee so bad it hurt all the time. He sent me home with Lortabs and a medicine for baldder spasams that was supposed to help me feel better about the stint. I took the Lortabs every four hours for the pain and to stay relaxed over the stint nightmare. I slept in the recliner two night not sleeping for more than 2 hours at a time. It hurst too bad to lay down. Went back to the doctor Thursday and the x-ray showed a tiny bit still in the urter but I told him I wanted that stint OUT! He took it out and within a few minutes I went to the bathroom and passed the rest. I looked like beach sand and pepper. I thought the ordeal was coming to an end. We stopped and picked up some dinner and came home.

By 6:00 Thursday night I was in so much pain and my belly blew up like I was 7 months pregnant. I sent my husband for Milk of Mag. b/c I realized I had not had a BM since Sunday. By 10:00pm we had my mom over here to stay with our daughter and we were heading for the ER. My belly hurt SO SO bad I was terrified I had a blockage. Got to the ER and I looked so bad they said they would get me back right then. My blood pressure was really high, I had low potassium, and they said I was dehydrated. They x-rayed my belly and said the right side was solid poo and the left side was solid gas. The Lortabs and being put to sleep along with the bladder spasam meds. had all turned off my intestines. They made me drink nasty potassium and did a hospital grade enema. Nothing came out but the water they but in. They sent me home at 3:00am wanting me to do all poop promoting activities I could. Between early Friday and now I have had 9 stool softeners, 2 enemas, a supposutory, 2 exlaxes, and even drank a bottle of Mag. Citrate last night. My belly is HUGE! about 2:00 this morning I did an enema and got out some gas and a tiny bit of poo so we are hopeful there is no blockage but I can't get any relief. My guts are in knots and I hate to take any poo promoting stuff b/c it's just cramping me up more. I'm worried that something got damaged during blasting or that my constant straining to pee with that stint in has injured something. I am in a lot of pain from my bowels and I'm trying not to take pain meds. My kidney still hurts quite a bit too. I will be calling my GI and urologist first thing in the morning. I just can't believe I haven't had a BM yet. I use Mag. Citirte for colonoscpoy clean-outs. It doesn't sound like anyone else has had this much trouble. This week has been way WORSE than a C-section ever thought about being!

Oh my! I am so sorry you had such a bad experience! I didnt realize you were having a stent put in too...that does make it bit more painful but I never experienced all of the additional problems you had. I feel so bad since I kept telling you it really wasn't too bad...how awful! I hope you are beginning to feel better!

I'm going to call my GI first thing in the morning and insist on some x-rays or a CT or something. I called the on-call GI at the hospital tonight and he was NO help! I told him everything I had taken and that I still had not had a BM and that if he were to look at me there would be no doubt in his mind I was pregnant. He actually said, "I don't really know what to tell you" I could have come through the phone at him! All he said was to go back to the ER. We decided that the ER wouldn't do anything they didn't do before and I'm going to try to make it through the night. My mom's going to take me tomorrow since it's her fall break from teaching. My poor husband has already missed a week of work so we're trying to save his days off. Right now I have a Percocet in my system so I think I feel fine but as soon as it starts wearing off....I am in bad pain again from my belly and kidney. The pain in my belly is straight through from the pain in my kidney so we're also wondering if the balsting caused damage somewhere else or even to my kidney. I've been drinking and peeing like crazy and my urine has cleared up so that's encouraging. On the day of blasting, the doctor described my urine as Coke. My mom said she's not going to let them send me home to drink anything. She's going to make sure someone will listen to me and try to figure out what is going on because I've already done the drink this or take that and see if it's better. Thanks so much for all of your help and support! It has been wonderful to have someone to talk to!!

Well, I didn't make it through the night. I woke my husband up at 12:35am and my mom was here within 10 min. We were in a bed in the ER by 1:00 and thankfully I had a different doctor and this one really cared about why I was in pain. He ordered a CT and guess what? It was a kidney stone. A 4mm. It was almost to the baldder so by the time the urologist came for rounds at 7:30 this morning I was feeling much better. He said I could just wait for it to pass because it was super close, or he could put the stint in to try to help it. I told him to not even say the word "stint" in front of me HA HA! He was very understanding. They said not to worry about the constipation b/c my body had been under so much stress and in so much pain that they said I would go. I was thinking, I don't know how after everything I've taken, drank, and done and still not gone poo. Well, we weren't home from the hospital 15 min. and we had POO POO POO. I feel like a new person!! I'm not totally sure if the stone is in the baldder yet but if it moves again that should be the end for sure. I'm straining my pee again and haven't seen anything but sand. I slept from 11:00am-5:00pm and woke up hungry! I haven't eaten a meal or slept for more than 2 hours in a week. I couldn't even lay in the bed it hurt so bad. I just napped in the recliner. I am so thankful for everyone that has given me their experience and will totally believe everyone when they say it's the worst pain of their life.
