I think I have a sinus infection. I'm going to the doctor later today. I had a lingering cold for the past 3 weeks that kept getting better and then coming back, and now i have the painful sinus headache and really plugged up ears. I don't have much drainage though.

I have recently become intrigued by neti pots. I've never tried one and they kind of scare me, but I've heard they can work wonders for people with sinus problems. I was wondering if anyone here has tried them and if they found any relief from them.

Hope everyone is doing well. Thanks for any responses.

THANK GOD FOR NETI POTS!!!!! yeah

I get sinus infections every October and April. I started using one this Spring, no sinus infection! If I'm out and it's a windy day I use it. Or if I spend alot of time in the garden digging with lots of dust/dirt I use it. A couple weeks ago the pollen count went through the roof here, I used it. If you already have an infection you'll most likely need antibiotics. But if you use this when you notice a sinus headache, you can avoid the infection! Buy one!!!!

Yes, I use something similar to a Neti pot and it's been terrific for me. This is the first year in a long time that I actually had a sinus infection; but really I haven't had one in a long time. Another great thing is acupuncture for your sinuses. I always go when I get that pressure feeling and it's usually around November or December...this year the sinus stuff came very early so I didn't catch it fast enough. Because I had read on this forum about a Z-pack, I asked my doc for it.. it is a once a day, 5-day antibiotic; it was fantastic and I didn't get any symptoms from it at all.

Cool. Thanks for the responses!

barbl - Can being outside on a cold windy day contribute to a sinus infection? I ask because this all started after I went for a long hike on a semi-cold day. After that my ears got all clogged up and they've been that way on and off ever since then (about 3 weeks).

Loneylane - I like the Z-pack, too. I used it for an ear or throat infection (can't remember) last year. I'm usually okay with amoxicillin too, so I'll see what this doctor wants me on. I just found out my family doctor no longer works at the clinic in town. I went through so many bad doctors before I found her (she's the one who actually listened to me when I first had UC symptoms and ran tests and didn't just tell me I had a fissure or the stomach flu, like the 3 other docs I saw before her). I am pretty bummed out she works in another town now.

You know that Oprah's Dr. Oz is a big proponent...?

I don't use neti pots, but I am a saline nasal spray addict. I use it at least 4 times a day, in the AM & before bed. Just plain saline, no drugs!!! I swear that's helped me avoid my ever present sinus infections. My sister uses neti pots though, & loves them.

Yeah, I heard Dr. Oz talked about them on Oprah, but I didn't see that episode. I heard neti pots saw a huge increase in sales after being featured on that show though.

Is it good to take Sudafed while having a sinus infection?

I've heard no- Sudafed dries you up, when what you really want is to stuff to drain out.

Well, the doctor I saw was an idiot. Spent 30 seconds with me and didn't give me antibiotics. He said to wait another 10 days (I have had this lingering for 3 weeks already!) and if it isn't better then to come back in. I know it's going to get worse...this is what always happens to me. I'll be back at the doctor in a couple days...

I just ate a raw clove of garlic b/c I read that it can help get rid of sinus infections and now I feel like I'm going to puke. That was disgusting...

Sorry to rant.

The doc. told me to take Sudafed...?? I'm sure he's probably wrong. He didn't even know if the virus in the flu shot was dead or alive. I had to tell him. (I also got a flu shot...which I'm not sure I was supposed to since I'm sick, but he said he thought it would be okay..)

My GI recommended a neti pot for my sinuses. She said that you could get them at Kroger Pharmacies. I haven't tried one yet. My ENT told me to mix 3 teaspoons of canning or pickling salt & 1 teaspoons of baking soda in a quart of water & squirt it in my nose about 2 or 3 times at day. He said not to use table salt because of additives. I can tell a big difference if I skip a day. You need to do it over a sink because you are suppose to squirt it the back of your head not toward the top. Warning sometimes it runs down into your mouth that it why you need the sink to spit it out in. gross but it works
Lialda 3 tablets  daily
Remicade every 8 weeks
Folid Acid daily
Methotrexate 3 times a week
Align Probiotic

Sorry you're having sinus trouble again, Sara. It seems to bedevil so many UCers! Some years back I was waiting to see the ENT doctor about an ear problem, when I overheard a couple young sinus patients comparing notes. One of them said that this doctor gave him some kind of dry heat treatments that helped a lot. (I had visions of the guy putting his head into a toaster oven-kind of contraption for half an hour! LOL!) Maybe some other members here know what that treatment is & can comment on it. Best wishes for you to get relief soon. / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])

Watch some video how-to's on YouTube. It can be tricky at first.

I have a deviated septum. The first side I tried worked fine but the other side didn't drain, it filled up at first. I had to tilt my head more and then it drained out. It takes some nerve at first, I had it for almost 3 months before I got up enough nerve to actually try it.

I personally have never used a neti pot but a lady I work with went on an on about how wonderful they are...I don't really have many sinus problems so I didn't feel like I needed one...She was even telling me that they really help even when you have just a cold...I have thought about getting one in the past just because she said it felt to good to clean out your sinuses...I haven't gotten one yet, but like I said, she loves them..

Thanks for the advice and comments.

I am just scared this infection is going to get worse since they didn't give me antibiotics right away. That's what happened with a throat infection last year and I ended up having an abscess that was so bad it wouldn't respond even to IV antibiotics in the hospital and I had to get my tonsils out. I believe that wouldn't have happened if they would have given me antibiotics right away.

At least I'm not pooping much...whenever I have another infection, my UC seems to settle down. I guess since it's busy fighting off an actual illness it doesn't have to attack myself.

The last time I had a sinus infection the NP prescribed me a stronger non-OTC Sudafed.

I've always wanted to use a neti pot but I'm so scared I'll use it incorrectly!
