My doctors nurse just called me at work and told me that I have osteoarthritis in my spine.  Does anybody else have UC and osteoarthritis?  If so, do you have any coping techniques for the pain?  They said for me to take a Ibuprofen or an Aleeve when experencing discomfort but don't want to take it because it upsets my stomach plus I think the pain is a little too intense at times and an asprin wouldn't cut it.  I wanted to tell the nurse over the phone that I have UC but felt uncomfortable doing so while at work.  So, any tips would be appreciated, thanks.

Although some of us can tolerate NSAIDS such as aspirin, ibuprofen or naproxen, generally it's recommended we try to avoid them. You definitely should talk to your doctor, especially since they bother your stomach. In your case, an enteric coated form that dissolves in your intestine wouldn't be a good choice because you already have problems there.

Tylenol is surprisingly good for pain relief sometimes, but it doesn't reduce inflammation. Talk to your doctor about this, and also ask your GI about the advisability of taking NSAIDs.

Thanks for the advice, Judilyn!  Made an appointment to see my GI doc next Wednesday.

How did they test for that? MRI? I am getting so stiff and sore every time I try to get moving lately. I keep telling myself it's because I am always pushing myself to stay fit (elliptical machine most mornings, strength training, and golf 2-3 rounds/week). But I wonder if it's starting to be something more. An MRI showed a very slightly bulging disk earlier this year, maybe it's just that getting irritated again. My bone density tests fine.

August 2008 sought care of naturopathic doctor. Tested gluten intolerant and started gluten-free, soy, dairy-free diet. Replete probiotic.
Achieved remission for the first time in many, many years!?
Seemed so, but colonoscopy Oct. 6 proved not so, heavy inflammation in ascending colon & now recovering from irritation scope caused. Will be using Rowasa again. But I AM better.
