Hi Everyone,
My doc recommened 3 in the am and 3 in the pm, does anyone take them like this? I'm still have to go to the bathroom a lot throughout the day. I'm frustrated.
Let me know your thoughts please

Harpo,

I responded to you on another post, are your stools formed though? Are your urgency free? What's your maintenace dose?

Sulfasalazine has always been prescribed to me in four doses I take with breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack and at dinner time. I take one pill four times a day as a maintenance dose and two pills four times a day for a therapeutic dose.
Diagnosed with ulcerative colitis spring 1999.

Maintenance dose sulfasalazine.
Probiotics, l-glutamine and fish oil caps. George's aloe vera juice. Oregano oil antibiotic, antiviral, antifungal. Long-term remission with only minor blips.

I am on sulfasalazine as well. I take 4 in morning, 4 in afternoon and 4 in evening (12 a day). I have been on it for 4 weeks. I still go 5 or more times a day and my bowel movements aernt solid they are more like hmmm... well not formed like they should be i guess. I take Flora Q every other day (its a probiatic). Im down to 20 mgs of prednisone a day been on it since june. 1 Prilosec every morning. I still cramp alot and alot of gas, so i guess im not out of my flare yet.

OMG Heathd, that's terrible having to take so much meds and you're not doing better. It took me a month to get the bleeding to stop, yours will too. I really like the sulfasaladine compared to asacol and colozal, it's worked the best for me. Have you tried doing a low carb, no sugar eating habit until your gut cools down? It's worth a shot. I'm 3 days no sugar. I eat a apple instead if I'm craving something. It has helped, my passing of stool is not as painful. I'm still going a lot the last couple of days I think b/c of cabbage. Were all helping each other here. I've learned alot from these posts. Also, how bad was your colits and where? I'm taking 4 a day now and they want to boost to 6, but you're on 12 I didn't know you could take that many. Good to know these things.

I was diagnosed in 2004/2005 with moderate to severe left sided UC . My original doctor tried me on a cpl different maintanence drugs the 5 asa or whatever they are things like asacol,i dont rem them all, the 6 mpa or whatever they are called i cant take becouse i get pancreaitis on them, but i was on remicade for 2 years and worked great but it slowly started to not work. I am supposed to start Humira on Tuesday. Its really not that bad i guess, it could always be worse. :) the Sulfasalazine is 12 pills a day at 500 mg a pill. I dont know if there are different doses so mayby i dont take as much as others. Im trying the food diary thing now and looking up cookbooks for a low residue diet, was told this will help. I try no sugar, even though chocolate is my vice. Will probably look into the low carb diet as well. I have already tried the gluten free diet, spent a fortune on it it didnt make much of a difference for me though. Doctor told me to go back to 30 mgs prednisone a day this afternoon so its back up on the dosage of prednisone :(. But like i said it could always be worse.

I take sulfasalazine the way your Doc recomended 3 in am and 3 in evening.  I think it is better to do 2, 2, 2 but I have a much easier time remembering the 3 and 3 plus I dont have to carrry meds with me during the day.  It seems to work fine as a two times a day dose, I have been using the drug in this way for many years.

My sulfasalazine is 2 tabs 3 times a day, I just take them with my meals, makes it easier to remember.
