I just found this forum today and really liked the answers and help people were getting from here so i joined and this is my first post. I was recently in the hospital 8 days due to a flare up. My GI suggested i consider taking Imuran. I have read a lot on it and some people like it and some have incredibly bad side affects. Can i get some of your opinions or experiences on it?

Welcome to HealingWell!

I took Imuran for a couple of years. Unfortunately it didn't help me, but I never had any side effects. You'll hear a lot about increased susceptibility to infections, but I had no problem with that, either. It does help a lot of people, hope you're one of them!

Had our first infusion on Tues. In one day, my daughter felt better! She was hospitalized again, this time for 7 days. Nothing has worked.
We are hopeful. Second infusion is in 2 weeks, so we will see if this holds. No early side affects. She will have a scope at week 8 to see if there has been healing of the badly damaged colon. The infusion was done under close supervision in the hospital thru a Picc line(she was badly dehydrated, and had no veins to speak of)
Will keep you posted.

The thing with Imuran is that it can take a month to actually start having an effect on the body so don't be disappointed if the response isn't immediate.

Imuran was a mixed bag for me. My body temperature gradually decreased within the first few weeks of taking it and it got to the point where I was "feeling chilly" in the highest of temperatures. The few other things I experienced were fatigue, nausea, a terrible taste in mouth. After a sustained period of taking it, I started getting anemic and was weaned off 50 mg of it.

I'm not taking it any longer but Imuran changed just about every fabric of my body. I shudder to think of how dull of a person it made me.

Luckily, most people experience little to no side effects from it but everyone is different.
Current Meds/Supplements:
10 mg Prednisone and tapering.
150 mg Imuran.
2 x 3 Asacol.
Prevacid (30 mg) for N.E.R.D.
Multivitamins and Caltrate.
And a whole lot of pain.
