My father had and my sister has AS. I apparently didn't have a positive for it 23 years ago (should ask my GI about it, however) but do have UC and PSC.
Interestingly, I suspect my mom didn't only have 'piles'...but she smoked.

Definitely do all the research on it...who else in your family has AS or UC or psoriasis?

I would think that Remicade could be an option for you? definitely would have its drawbacks, however, I would believe that keeping your flares under control help a lot.

I am positive for the gene as well.  I saw a rheumatologist as I was having severe lower back pain.  I had several CT scans, X-rays and MRI's and the rheumy told me that I had arthritis in my spine from the ulcerative colitis.  No one else in my family has UC or AS or anything like that.  I think there is a link between the colitis and the HLA-B27 gene though.

How did you find out you had the gene? Did you ask your doc. to test you for it? What does AS stand for?

I don't know if you are asking me or not.. but AS stands for Anklosing Spondylitis. It is a disease of your spine where the bones fuse together. The HLA-B27 gene test is a simple blood test. You are either positive or negative...if you are positive you will always be positive.

I have it as well, and several of the related ailments: Crohn's disease (both ileal and oral), pustular psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, and some inflammation in the eyes. It's a real treat! I've had these problems for about 20 years.

With aggressive treatment, inflammatory symptoms can be controlled. What works for me? Humira ... weekly ... is very good for most of this. 6-mp adds to the effect. Budesonide is good for the ileal crohn's. High-dose fish oil helps. My skin is clear, and my Crohn's is usually under decent control.

Good luck. Hang in there.

I tested positive when I as about 20 yrs old.  I have several brothers and male cousins who also have AS.  When I was 32 I was diagnosed with UC.  It is all connected.  It is not my spine that is bad as much as all my other joints.  My entire family is a walking autoimmune disaster.

I was told by a Rheum that I was negative for the gene.  Nevertheless, I still have had terrible upper back and neck problems where it feels like my spine is growing in the wrong direction or something.  Chiro helped me and my stiffness/pain gets better after movement and exercise.  go figure.
Diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis 6/2006 at age 26 after sudden E.R. visit
~Pancolitis (Mild to Moderate)
 ~I had Mono in 2000
On Colazal 3x3/day; Folic Acid 1mg; Calcium/Magnesium/Zinc combo
(Generic Balsalazide not as effective for me)
In remission about 2-3 months after E.R. but not back to normal!
I hate Ulcerative Colitis and can't wait till we eradicate it

AS among many other issues like eyes, bones, skin are extra intestinal manifestations of IBD so it's not surprising that you have AS....just because no one eles in your family has IBD or AS or any other immune problems doesn't mean that they won't, my mom didn't get sick with UC until she was in her mid 60's, I got sick with crohn's in my early 20's BEFORE my mom got sick with her IBD.
