Dear all,
I am tapering down off of prednisone, down the 30 MG this week, but I've been feeling kind of bloated. I've been taking Gas-X every once in a while. Is this okay? I haven't asked the doctor yet. So far I've been getting better I think....having normal AM bowel movements and such.... however.....

I am worried though that my symptoms will come back the lower down I taper. Does this usually happen more often than not? I hate the prednisone. I'm trying to eat right.... I haven't had wheat or too much fiber so I think I'm doing okay on that. Unfortunately my blood test results from yesterday showed potassium deficiency and anemia so I've been eating more red meat (which I don't really like)..... and I can't take iron pills because they worsen my cramps.

Please someone give me some hope. It seems that most of the posts say that symptoms (blood, cramping, flare....etc.) come back the lower down you taper and now I'm so nervous and anxious about it. Has anyone successfully tapered down off of prednisone and then went into remission for an extended period of time?

Also I've been eating a yogurt a day. I hear this is good for UC. Is this true? I am not lactose intolerant.... thank god.

I am sorry to be so sour but I've been out of the hospital for 10 days and was hoping to feel a little more positive than this by now.....

Hard to say. pred certainly is rough stuff. ive had a few times where i tapered prednisone and once i got to 10 mg, my colitis came roaring back and i had to go on a stronger drug such as 6mp to get into remission. other times ive been able to just come off prednisone and use the lialda as a maintence drug. you just dont know until you lower your dosage. usually at each dosage drop, you might get a day or 3 of some symptoms returning, like gas, some diareha, pain, slight fever, etc. that should subside by day 5 (and coincidently, your next cut depending on your taper plan). if it does not subside, call the doctor at once and figure out how to go from there. he may bump you up(if your symptoms are gettin worse) or he will probably hold you at that level for a few more days to see if it resolves.

colitis flares takes a while to resolve. ive been out of the hospital a few weeks now and i still feel sick, but definatly improved from the time i was taken into the hospital. i am down to 20 mg of pred(from i believe 80 or 100, i was kind of out of it the first few days) and hoping the same things you are... even though ive been down this road before. This disease bites the you know what... that much is for sure. but you can definalty achieve long remissions. some people go many many years without flares. i myself have only had a long term remission of 2 years which was wonderful while it lasted.

anymore questions just hollar
UC since age 22, now 27.  Several huge flares since then.
Currently tapering prednisone(35 mg from 80 mg).  Also just starting 6mp again and lialda.   I definately am not liking these drugs.  Maybe surgery one day?

I take gasx no more than 2 caps otherwise it may give you D,but I keep it on hand all the time.I keep it in my car,my bedroom,purse,suitcase-i never go without! My doctors have never said not to take it.Some say it doesnt work, but let me tell you it does! It is actually the same thing that is given to babies for gas except that is in a liquid form.I am not a doctor,so make sure you ask-I will never be without!!Yes I have come off of pred.and gone into remission for two years, but everyone is different.Yogurt(Activia) is great to take as well as a good probiotic,my gastro recommends it highly.
