I've read 68% of those with IBD are vitamin D deficient. I looked that up and they have linked vitamin D deficiency with auto immune diseases and cancer.
I am taking a supplement because (shock of shocks) I am very deficient.  Anyone else?

I take 1000 IU a day, plus a multivitamin with 500 IU. This is triple the RDA, but I was deficient also.

I think this applies to a lot of autoimmune diseases; I recently saw the same discussion going on at the Lupus board.
Moderate to severe left-sided UC (21 cm) diagnosed 2001.
Avascular necrosis in both shoulders is my "forever" gift from Entocort.
Colazal,  Remicade, Nature's Way Primadophilus Reuteri. In remission since April, 2006.

i've been taking it for while....only about 950 IU...but will up it a bit now that the season is changing. I'm not a sun person, so definitely don't get any that way.

I did have my level checked, but the doc didn't call back to say if I'm deficient. My husband, who doesn't have any autoimmune problems that we know of..was severely deficient and was on 2000 IU for 3 months and is down to 1000 IU and takes an extra 1000IU every few days.

*Heather* Status..Asacol 6 (3 twice daily); enemas every 4th night
~diagnosed January 1989 UC (proctosigmoiditis)
~Bentylol (dicyclomine) 20mg as needed
~Probiotic 4(Natural Factors Protec) bedtime + Primadophilus Reuteri Pearls occasionally
~multi-digestive enzymes as needed
~Ranitidine,Pariet (reflux);  Effexor XR 75mg(depression);  Pulmicort/Airomir (asthma)
~URSO for PSC (or PBC) 500mg X 2 daily (LFTs back to NORMAL!!)
My doc's logic.. "TREAT (FROM)BOTH ENDS"  worth it !!!

My DO recently did a bunch of random blood work on me. It showed a vit D deficiency. I wasn't surprised since I live in the rainy NW. He suggested I take 2,000IU vit D a day. I've been on calcium supplements for a while, esp. while on Pred, and they have 400IU vit D. I did a little research on the www, but it so hard to know what is right and wrong with so much info out there. There has been some info in the news recently about people having vit D deficiency and it being linked with some cancers, possibly. Who knows! I don't know if I should go without sunscreen, and what about the kiddos? So much to think about!
Hope everyone is doing well.

I've taken vit D supplements during the winter months to help boost my lwered levels due to less sun exposure. I have that little condition called SAD (seasonal affective disorder), and I can tell when I'm not getting the sunlight my body wants. I also use one of those Full spectrum lamps every morning, but I don't know that it does any good.

I get 500 units daily from Centrum Silver (multivitamin for age 50+) plus about 100 more units of vit D from fortified Lactaid milk. A few years back my gastro tried to jog my then-deficient system with a megapill; it made me very sick within a couple hours of ingesting!!!!!! Therefore, I would caution that too much vit D can be toxic. It makes my eyes more sensitive to bright light, for one thing. IBD patients with impaired absorption of nutrients (Crohnies moreso than UCers) are less likely to suffer problems from high doses of vit D. / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])
