"... 54-year-old patient with long standing ulcerative colitis [italics mine] who experienced fever, diarrhoea and abdominal pain 2 week after receiving corticosteroids as a treatment for severe cluster headaches..."

"The patient made complete recovery following appropriate treatment with anti-parasitic drug. The researchers note that this patient's case underscores the need to exclude even rare parasitic infections that may mimic a flare-up of ulcerative colitis."

I guess it might be prudent not to give in to diagnosis so quickly.  Of course, even if you're paranoid it might take good fortune (a blessing) for someone to find what needs to be fixed.

Another day, another article.  We can still hope.

This is interesting and probably is an indication of what may well  be the underlying type of problem some of us have. I, for one, find my GI and GP both glibly put any symptoms I have down to UC and IBS, and are addicted to mesalamine, cortisone, and colonoscopies even in the face of limited results.
21 years of UC which started after quitting smoking. In and out of flares which are usually triggered by antibiotics. Latest issue is endless diarrhea without blood or mucous.

  • 2 500mg Pentasa a day
  • Psyllium powder
  • Culturelle probiotic

Mitzo - that's what I'm saying!

An article I read on this particular parasite mentioned that you may need around 7 tests to get to the point where its around 90 percent accurate. Well, I had to twist my GI's arm to get one parasite test ordered. And I basically have no information on lab testing for parasites. I would think there would be more public education about this and more businesses doing it. I mean, people travel these days etc.. and some of the darned things can really screw people up and lay low on the radar for years.

The one test I had came back negative (I have no idea what they looked/tested for). Times like these I wish I knew some folk who do tests like this (test poop for a living, yikes) but they are valuable people.
