Why is it that I am having problems w/ weight gain and bloating?  The meds I am on shouldn't cause this.  When I was at the worst part of my flare I was terrified to eat.  I don't over eat, trust me, and I eat a bland diet like my doctor advised.  But some days I am so bloated I feel 6 months pregnant and trust me at 51 I don't wanna be pregnant!  All the things I read, most people w/ UC lose weight so whats my problem?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

The probiotics, psyllium and fiber wafers can all cause bloating! Maybe that's all too much, especially too much fiber, for you right now. My GI also advises against taking vitamins. So there's a few possibiities!

Asacol/5ASA 6x400 mg maintenance for 20+ years; use prednisone & Rowasa for flares.
August 2008 sought care of naturopathic doctor. Food sensitivity test showed gluten, other intolerances; started diet without gluten, soy, dairy, tomato etc. Replete probiotic first, now Forte pills.
Achieved remission for the first time in many, many years!? Seemed so, but colonoscopy Oct. 6 proved not so, heavy inflammation in ascending colon & will be using Rowasa again. But I AM better.

I feel bloated if I eat foods with yeast or MSG. A lot of processed foods now have yeast. It's not only bread anymore. Maybe that is the same for you? Do you eat artificial sugar? That causes my gut to go ballistic, as well. If you are concerned about weight gain, you could cut out breads, pasta, processed sugar for awhile, actually all 'white' processed foods. Depends on how badly you want/need to lose the weight, I guess. That may also help with your symptoms, too. What exactly is a "bland" diet for you?

Peety - what is your doctor's concern about not taking vitamins.  I take a multi and calcium w/D as prescribed.

It had something to do with the binders in the vitamins, that they could prevent you from getting the full effect of the meds. He was adament about it, always checking that I didn't take them. My current GI and naturopath agreed, but I didn't go into with them exactly how/why. I've brought it up a few times here, asking if anyone else knows, until I have an opportunity to ask.

Thanks Peety - I will ask my NP and doctor if they know anything about them.  This morning the side effects from Lialda were terrible and I am going to try skipping a day - wondering if the Lialda pills are not making it to my colon to dissolve - maybe they do that in my stomach for some reason.  I do have GERD and a hiatal hernia and take Prilosec for heartburn.  It is something to think about anyway.  ElaineNY

Good info about the vitamins. I was taking everything at night, but I will space it out during the day. As for Lialda, it gave me the WORST GAS EVER! When in hardcore flare I lose weight. But out of flare I tend to gain weight. I have been pretty bloatly. I took some water pills and that seemed to take care of the bloat.

I omitted my vitamin today - we'll see if this helps some this week. Also am not eating the fiber wafer this week to see if this helps.
