My doctor started me on 6-MP to try and help get me off of prednisone (became dependant and unable to taper).  I was fine on the initial dose without much side effects other than slight nausea a couple of hours after taking my dose.  I was able to combat that by eating a small snack around that time.  After my blood work came back good they increased my dose to where he wants me to be on, however i have been nauseous ever since.  Nothing i try seems to work. I have taken it with food, at night, before bed, before bed with food...still nauseous.  I have been on the increased dose for 2 weeks now.  Is this something that will eventually go away over time or is it something i will always feel like?  I hate to stop taking it if it is something that can get me off of prednisone...any suggestions would be great.

You may have to take something to help with the nausea until your body gets accustomed to it. I was slightly nauseas too when I started but it went away after a while. Call your doc up and see if he can prescribe something for the nausea. Or even go to your local pharmacy and see what they have there. Peppermint tea helps great with nausea too btw.

Erin- I had that for the first 2 weeks of 6MP 100MG daily. It was awful, after speaking with my Gi he told me about Antiemetics.
These meds are designed to prevent or relieve nausea and vomiting. Many are available without a prescription, such as Benadryl, Dramamine, Pepcid AC, Tagamet and Maalox.

Other antiemetics require a prescription, such as Compazine, Reglan, Marinol, or Zofran. Some of these meds may interact with your UC medications, however, so check with your doctor before taking them.

Let us know. I took Zofran it worked well but can make people tired.

Thank you for the suggestions! I love peppermint tea so i have been drinking that as much as possible which does seem to help some. I did talk to my doctor and they said it was pretty much a side effect that is normal and unless i was vomiting, having severe abdominal pain or high fever they want me to stick it out (they are trying to get me off of prednisone). I had my blood work check done yesterday so they were going to make sure my levels looked ok, but otherwise they suggested breaking up my dose into a twice a day time period instead of all at once. So far it does seem to be helping which would be nice.

teacupsunderfire....did you find that after time you no longer needed to take the Antiemetics and that your body had just adjusted itself to the 6-MP on its own or did you need to remain on them as long as you were on 6-MP?
