so it has gotten worse since I am now down to 2.5mg a day.  I had clear skin before pred.

I have a ton of tiny red pimples, some have white heads some do not, they are on my forehead, cheeks, chin, neck and chest.   They hurt too!

I have tried almost everything but they wont go away, i'd prefer not to take any more meds right now, but I seriously need to get these off my face.  I have a business trip to the UK next month and would prefer not to be in a full blown break out.

Anyone try pro-active?  I am about to order some.

Proactive works great for the type of acne you are describing.
Mine, unfortunately, are deep below the skin so topical meds dont really do much.

Proactive is by far the best topical medicine I have ever used. I dont really get acne anymore, but I still use the face wash. Heads up though, if you go to Target, there is some stuff (the name slips me) in an orange container that is a direct replacement for Proactive at about a 1/3rd the price.

Try a lotion that says it is "calming." Kiehls' makes one called Recovery Skin Salve "to soothe temporarily irritated and sensitive skin." I used it for sunburn. Aloe is one ingredient.
I've not tried Proactive, but the ingredients seem the same as all the other acne meds so I thought it was just hype.

Asacol/5ASA 6x400 mg maintenance for 20+ years; use prednisone & Rowasa for flares.
August 2008 sought care of naturopathic doctor. Food sensitivity test showed gluten, other intolerances; started diet without gluten, soy, dairy, tomato etc. Replete probiotic first, now Forte pills.
Achieved remission for the first time in many, many years!? Seemed so, but colonoscopy Oct. 6 proved not so, heavy inflammation in ascending colon & will be using Rowasa again. But I AM better.

try differen or if your skin can handle it you could try retin-a. also the thing that made the biggest difference for me was birth control

just ordered the pro-active, hope it works out.

I took retin-a as a teen and it did nothing for me along w/the tetracycline and bc pills.

Differin might help me though, I took it years ago and those did help my smaller pimples just not the cyst ones I had to go on accutane for. I had forgotten all about that.

I'll try the pro-active first and if it works well may try the target stuff as it is cheaper and if not will see about going on differin again, though I think that might be an antibiotic so not sure about that and the uc? I can't remember if that was the topical stuff or the pill stuff I took?

I had really bad skin from pred throughout high school and nothing worked, proactive even made me worse. But I started using Clean and Clear products and still use them religiously and have smooth skin to this day. My usual routine is:
Regular face wash in the morning (I really like the foaming kind or the Morning Burst products)
Deep cleaning face wash at night (the Deep Action Cream Cleanser is good, as is the Scrub Purifying Cleanser from their "Soft" line of products)
Deep Cleaning Astringent or Daily Pore Cooling Toner (I usually alternate days on these)

I also always have a pack of their oil absorbing sheets in my purse to use throughout the day to keep oil down and I moisturize in the morning if my face gets dry.

Their Advantage line is specifically for acne and can work really well, however my skin is sensitive and it dried me out a lot so I stick to the more gentle stuff. My bathroom looks like I should work for them though, I've got Clean and Clear products all over the place haha.

Female, 23, Ulcerative colitis (pancolitis) since 1999; GERD; gastritis; osteopenia in femur head & lumbar spine from long term prednisone use...

Current Meds:
Lexapro 10mg, Sulfasalizine 3000mg/day, Azasan 100mg

I'm not even on pred and I have acne! It's driving me insane. I'm afraid to try different products b/c I have really sensitive skin (and so I definitely can't use Pro-active b/c it has benzyl peroxide--people with sensitive skin are supposed to look for products with salicylic (sp?) acid). I've been using Clean & Clear's face scrub and it has not helped. I found some home remedies for acne so I think I'll try those.

Female, Age 20
9 Asacol, Rowasa, 1000 mg Canasa, Proctofoam, Rifaximin 2/day

ComedyDork-

Sometimes the face scrub products will make things worse especially if you have sensitive skin, I don't know if it's the abrasiveness or what. My boyfriend has that same problem and if he even uses the face scrub for one night he'll break out the next morning. Have you ever tried the cream cleansers? I like the Oxygenating Face Wash too, it makes my skin feel really soft after using it.

Cetaphil face for oily skin is great, too, doesn't dry your skin out and is super gentle.
I also like the Neutrogena products, including the healthy skin wrinkle/blemish cream.

ediekristen--I'm using the sensitive skin formula of the foaming facial scrub. And I only use it every other day b/c it dried out my skin when I used it everyday.
I was thinking about trying Neutrogena once I finish my bottle of Clean & Clear since I tried a different C&C product in high school and it didn't help.

ComedyDork, you should try cetaphil face wash as Peety also suggested, it does not dry out your face, it is really gentle and helps keep your face moisturized, it is dermatologist recommended..........I sound like a commercial

I had the same thing happen the first time I was on Prednisone, I got down to 5-10 mg's and broke out like crazy.  It does go away after a couple of weeks but in the meantime use a regular over hte counter acne scrub at night and moisturizer before bed and in the morning, and you'll be just fine.

Diagnosed January 07 - but realize I've been living with minor flare-ups for 10+ years.

Asacol 2 pills/3 times a day.
Flaring and back on Prednisone.  Big sigh . . . . . .

So I went to my PCP today for ear problems but I also asked about my acne and she prescribed me Celocin-T. I looked it up on WebMD and found this: "A small amount of this medication may be absorbed into your bloodstream and may rarely cause a severe intestinal condition (pseudomembranous colitis) due to a resistant bacteria. This condition may occur while receiving treatment or even weeks to months after treatment has stopped...Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: chronic asthma or hay fever (atopic conditions), intestinal diseases (e.g., ulcerative colitis, enteritis)."!!!!
Uh, I'll stick to OTC stuff.

WOAH! Yeah I would definitely not take that. I wonder why your PCP would have even prescribed such a thing to someone with UC. Good thing you looked it up before taking it.

I had my doc prescribe retin-a which I used at night. Unfortunately it makes it worse before it makes it better because it brings everything out. You have to sty out of the sun though to because it strips the skin slowly. Cetiphil worked good as a cleanser. But ultimately I found I did not clear up completely until after I stopped the Pred. A far as the impurities under the skin that did not surface, that was a challenge. I had tones of tiny white bumps that would not surface. I found if you by a good clychlolic cleanser or go get mild peals from a derm they will come out. I had perfect skin than Pred made my entire f a pizza now my skin is perfect again without a scar, So don't be discouraged.

Hey everyone,

I was diagnosed with UC in summer of 2006.. Im 20 right now, and it sucks!!!!!!
I had a blood transfusion 2 weeks ago, and im on 800mg of asacol, iron pills... and now im on presidone of 40mg a day

I still get bleeding like 2-3 times a week, and it seems like none of the medication is working..
predisone did help for a while but the side effects are insane!!
i cant sleep at night some night,
i get joint pains
i never really had a problem with acne, just a few bumps here and there but with predisone its given me like a rash on my face, nothing pops out just little tiny tiny red spots, and now i wanna get off of predisone, ive been on the medication for about 4 weeks, and today im gonna stop taking it. But i was wondering, how long does it take for the predisone to actually clear out through your body?, and does anybody had/have the same problem and if so, how long does it take to disolve the side effects?

*Update* - I had to up my pred to 10mg b/c of my kidneys and it helped clear up the pred/acne/rash and also I got the proactive in and have been using it for 3 days and my skin looks great! I think it's a combo of both. I reaserached and it said that with tapering it can increase some side effects such as the acne.

Hi Lavi - you may want to start another thread but from what I have read my theory is that it takes about half the time you were on pred for the side effects to go away. I also have terrible joint pain, after being on 5mg for about 2 mos, my joint pain got 'slightly' better. Probably not what you wanted to hear, but I hope you stay well! Take Care!
