I was diagnosed with IBS 3 years ago in august, at the good age of 18. I had a long 3 month recovery put me on the couch for months and lost 25lbs in a month. A year later in January I move to Utah for a job opportunity lasted a week and a half ended up in the hospital saw a doctor down there and he wanted to do a colonoscopy the very next day! So I drank that crap and pooped the night away to find out the next day that my all my intestines from the top to the bottom were inflamed. Lost 25lbs within a month again, flew back home to my parents and spent the next few months in bed, again.. last year i barely made it through, during the winter time like always, I dont know how. Now here Iam dealing with flare ups as we speak started about 2 weeks ago, always during the change to autumn until spring. So thats my story, i decided im sick of it and tired of forking over money to the doctor, so i got on google and found this place looks like theres gonna be alot of good info and people.

Hi, sorry to hear you have suffered so much. Many of us have noticed flare-up tied to change in seasons.
What treatments have you tried? You'll get lots of advice about that here!
And thoughtful discussions about when surgery is the best option.
Although I hope you can learn things you can do to get better instead.
49 year old female attorney, diagnosed UC/pancolitis 1985, no surgery but much suffering.
Asacol/5ASA 6x400 mg maintenance for 20+ years; use prednisone & Rowasa for flares.
August 2008 sought care of naturopathic doctor. Food sensitivity test showed gluten, other intolerances; started diet without gluten, soy, dairy, tomato etc. Replete probiotic first, then Forte pills.
Achieved remission for the first time in many, many years!? Seemed so, but colonoscopy Oct. 6 proved not so, heavy inflammation in ascending colon & will be using Rowasa again. But I AM better.

Hi Darren! Welcome to HealingWell :) We're sorry you had to find us, but glad you did. This is a great forum with lots of knowledgeable and caring people.

Were you diagnosed with ulcerative colitis or crohn's disease after your scope?

There are many of us that find we develop seasonal flaring.

When flaring badly I can not drink milk. When I am flaring mildly or in remission, I can drink as much milk as I like.

Have you tried any probiotics?

Hope to see you around!

Yup, if all your intestines were inflamed from top to bottom that's crohn's...I too have crohn's (crohn's colitis specifically, which is CD affecting the colon where UC typically hangs out)...I too became severely lactose intolerant and had success using lactaid products but once I started using a probiotic called primadophilus reuteri made by natures way which happens to aid with lactose intolerance I no longer have to use the lactaid products so that's a bonus and saves me lots of $$.

BTW I also have IBS which came after having CD for 12 yrs straight with no remission...I've now had crohn's for 17 yrs straight.

:)
My bum is broken....there's a big crack down the middle of it! LOL :)

By "top to bottom" did your doc mean small intestine and large intestine? Or did he mean throughout the whole colon (larg intestine)?

It is also common for IBDers to develop IBS - if they didn't have it already.
