My Neph prescribed eythromycin for my pred acne, it just exploded all over my face, neck and chest in the last couple of days.

It's an antibiotic so I worry about it causing a flare up?  Should I call GI?  Anyone take it before?
Beth, 33 ~ hoping to taper pred successfully, wish me luck!

Erythromycin is one of the worst for me. If I take it, I explode (and I don't mean my face.) I also suspect it may not be effective against Pred acne, but I don't know for sure. If you decide to take it, I'd recommend taking massive amounts of probiotics while you're on it.

I wouldn't do it!! Call your GI. Use a topical. it's not worth causing or exacerbating a flare.
(I also didn't know of prednisone causing acne.)
(What's a neph?)
49 year old female attorney, diagnosed UC/pancolitis 1985, no surgery but much suffering.
Asacol/5ASA 6x400 mg maintenance for 20+ years; use prednisone & Rowasa for flares.
August 2008 sought care of naturopathic doctor. Food sensitivity test showed gluten, other intolerances; started diet without gluten, soy, dairy, tomato etc. Replete probiotic first, then Forte pills.
Achieved remission for the first time in many, many years!? Seemed so, but colonoscopy Oct. 6 proved not so, heavy inflammation in ascending colon & will be using Rowasa again. But I AM better.

yeah it's another lovely side effect. I had been able to keep it pretty much under control but when I got down to 5mg it started getting worse and then when I got to 2.5 it just went everywhere. I reasearched it and found that when tapering pred it can cause some of the side effects to worsen.

Neph is short for my Nephrologist for my Kidneys. Some of the meds I take can be used for both my kidneys and UC, it's tough treating both at the same time and I have to be careful to make sure what I take for one does not cause something with the other. My Neph had me take aspirin for my trip to the dominican because of my edema and I believe that caused my last flare.........I just did not even think about it.

I am going to call my GI, I don't want to chance flaring again.

Did you get a hold of you GI?

I personally wouldn't take it. I have pretty annoying acne (not from pred), but I'm scared to take anything for it and don't really want to use anymore prescription drugs anyway so I just deal with it, though it is annoying.
Diagnosed with UC March 2007; Asacol 4 tablets 3x/day; Rowasa; Canasa; Viactiv; Metamucil wafers; multivitamin; sublingual allergy drops

I personally wouldn't take it either. My PCP prescribed a topical antibiotic for acne and it had a side effect (although rare) of a type of colitis!

Double check with your GI, if he says go for it then up your probiotics and be sure to take your probiotics at least 2 hours after you're done taking the antibiotics for the day or the antis will kill off the pros.
