Just curious as to how your colitis flares usually start?

I thought my colitis onset was fairly standard until this fall when I had a more strange set of symptoms before I knew it even was colitis.  Usually in the past, I would get some urgency, diareha, and then more frequency, blood, onto fever, fatigue, etc.

This latest and greatest bout that had me in the hospital started with a fever one night, very severe fatigue, low blood pressure and some slight cramping.  I had no urgency, bleeding, or anything strange GI wise for the first 3 days of fever(~100)/fatigue/low BP.   Then on day 4 I started to notice some mucous, even though i only had 2 bm's a day.  Day 5, very fatigued to the point of passing out twice, and then felt pressure to go to the bathroom, and it was gushing blood.  Happened again 20 minutes later.. and thats when the severe pain started.   Still no urgency though.  Very strange.  I am guessing the flare-up didn't start in the rectum which is why there was no urgency.

Anyone have any similar experiences or thoughts?  This scared me pretty good as to how fast it can go downhill and how it kind of hit me without warning.  The day before I had the fever, i felt perfectly normal and great.  The first night in the hospital the urgency came and I must have went about 20 times in 6 hours.  Wasn't pleasant...........

UC since age 22, now 27.  Several huge flares since then.  3/4 colon diseased.

Currently tapering prednisone(10 mg from 80 mg).  Also just starting 6mp again(75 mg) and lialda.   I definately am not liking these drugs.  Maybe surgery one day?

Vin, have you seen your GI since all this has happened? What does he/she have to say about it?

Its been quiet a while since I've had flares that bad - especially with the whole blood-gushing thing - but I do remember getting them randomly and suddenly that badly. When I was diagnosed with UC it was also 3/4 of my colon but it spread to my entire colon and 1/2 my rectum. I had the J-pouch surgeries (colon removed) a few years back and it really was a life-saver and honestly, if you're going through all this now, I really do hope that one day you get it done.
Dx w/ UC 2000;
J-pouch surgeries in 2002 - colon removed except for last tiny part connected to rectum which keeps inflaming;
Currently in remission from August hospitalization and tappering off Pred. (now 7.5mg);
Remicade, Cymbalta, Prevacid, Famotadine, QVAR,
Auto-immune disorder, anxiety disorder, mild asthma (chronic bronch), & Crohns related arthritis.

I think you may have had some other ailment, and it caused you to flare.
That's what I would think if this happened to me.

With my flares, my gut starts to get gurglely. Then the urgency...
49 year old female attorney, diagnosed UC/pancolitis 1985, no surgery but much suffering.
Asacol/5ASA 6x400 mg maintenance for 20+ years; use prednisone & Rowasa for flares.
August 2008 sought care of naturopathic doctor. Food sensitivity test showed gluten, other intolerances; started diet without gluten, soy, dairy, tomato etc. Replete probiotic first, then Forte pills.
Achieved remission for the first time in many, many years!? Seemed so, but colonoscopy Oct. 6 proved not so, heavy inflammation in ascending colon & will be using Rowasa again. But I AM better.

Yes, I have been in touch with my GI(actually 2 of them) and they said that depending on the severity of the flare, it can manifest itself as such, but its somewhat more rare.  With this flare I've noticed more upper and left sided pain than lower which is strange as I usually get it more lower.   But hten again I am taking a rectal med so that might be helping out the lower portion of things.

I am actually going to my GI today so I will ask him some more questions.  This has probably been my worst flare.  I am considering surgery at this point and i know its worth it in the long run.  But it pains me to know that the recovery is quite a process.  But what the heck, i've been sick for a long time... and its just more of the same right?  :) :).  and at least with that sickness, recovery... you will recover and there is an endpoint.

I wouldn't be suprised.  i have had colds/other sicknesses cause me to flare before.  The reason this flare is different is because I haven't had the urgency as much as in other flares.  So i guess that means my rectum is not as diseased as other parts.

I went down to 10 mg of pred the other day.. and all my inital symptoms came back.  Fever, unbelievable fatigue, sharp pain in my lower left and upper left abdomen, and urgency.  I bumped the pred back to 20 and its calmed down a bit again.

This has been a brutal flare!!
