The higher the content the better, compare what you're taking to VSL 3 for example, which researchers have discovered as being super affective for IBDers, it's content is enormously high...I don't think acidophilus alone is adequate.

I try to eat the homemade yogurt from the Specific Carbohydrate Diet.  One cup has 700 billion bacteria.  That's the highest amount I've seen yet, and it only makes me feel better.  I don't think you can overdo it.

There don't seem to be any hard and fast rules- we are all so individual in our reactions to, and benefits from, probiotics. But generally the stuff in drugstores are low-potency junk, mostly just filler. There are of course many higher quality probiotic brands off the top of my head including for example: Garden of Life Primal Defense; Customprobiotics.com; Nature's Way; Trenev; Pro-bio; Culturelle; and VSL-3. Currently for example I use Primal defense, Pure Encapsulations brand Sachoromyces Boulardi, Nature's Way Reuteri, Pro-bio inulin free, and Culturelle, mixing and rotating them around from day to day. But you kind of have to do a bit of trial and error. SCD yogurt is terrific if you can tolerate it, as Kiss520 pointed out.

Pancolitis 20 years ago, full med-free remission 10 years,
Flaring/simmering on and off ever since

Turmeric/circuminboswellia, fish oil, many vits/minerals
Lower-carb version of Specific Carb Diet (SCD), Remicade next
