I spoke w/ my doctor yesterday and told him that I felt I was heading towards remission that the blood was gone mucus is very little, but that I still felt neauseated and my bottom felt like it was still falling out because of the pain.  He took me off the asacol and is having me do the canasa twice a day.  Do you think this will get rid of my pain?  I bend over and it hurts.  I think it was Judilynn that suggested laying on my side and pulling my legs up and that did help.

Also, is it uncommon to still see old blood?  Not as much but I do still see it on occasion.

Hope everyone is having a fabulous day.

Now, time to go wash the grey out of my hair LOL!

Check back in in a bit.

Hi Gigi,

Please be careful, I went cold turkey off of asacol for medical reasons and went into a tsunami of a flare.

If you start getting worse notify your GI straightaway.

Asacol is a maintenance med, meant to be taken long-term....  I would be very, very leery of stopping it, & go for a 2nd opinion before you make any changes. I too went off Asacol cold turkey, after being in total remission for about 3 years, & went into such a bad flare that I'm still feeling the aftereffects. Not to mention that I've had to go on super heavy-duty drugs, at high doses... I wish I'd stayed on good old Asacol the first time! Your doctor sounds very uninformed.

diagnosed with UC '02
meds-
Asacol- 8 tabs/day
Remicade-10mgs/kg- since 4/07
Imuran- 150mgs/day
Culturelle
Fiber supplement

I agree with the previous posts. Placed on Asacol when diagnosed in 2005. Did very well with only minor flares for 3 years. In Feb 2008 (in remission), went to new GI in new city. He said since I only had ulcerative proctitis (at time of diagnosis) Asacol wasn't appropriate and Canasa was better (more localized). By June, moderate flare, resolved with Rowasa. By August, full-blown bad flare--never experienced anything so horrible. Hospitalized, severe pain, placed on prednisone for first time (wish I had never had to do that, and hope not to again!). Colonoscopy revealed pancolitis (did it get worse/spread after stopping the Asacol?) I basically had to beg for my Asacol back (8x400mg per day), and now doing much better--off prednisone, following low fiber diet as a precaution.

If you had been doing well on Asacol, I would caution against stopping it. From my experience, Canasa didn't do anything for the pain, just delivered the medication to a specific area. I have a strong suspicion that I would not have had such a severe flare had I not discontinued Asacol, and deeply regret it. If you do try the Canasa instead, call your doc ASAP at the first sign of a slide back towards a flare!!!

I really appreciate your information. I have had some concerns w/ this doctor in that on the day of my scope he was "rushed" and dismissed my diagnosis as not a big deal. I will check w/ my family practioner and have him recommend perhaps another GI.

Again, thank you
