Dear All,
I've been having a difficult time with my BMs. Although they've not been very frequent - max 2-3x/day, they have been huge and very hard logs. I was given a colonoscopy and they noticed a 'mild' imflammation and told me to continue the Asacol + Rowasa. When it didn't get better I was put on 10mg pred for 2 weeks and 5mg pred for 2 more. At that time my BMs were softer and a little more normal, but I was miserable not being able to sleep etc. I met with the phys after the pred cycle and he said all was fine but my BMs, 1-2x/day, are progressively getting harder and harder, so much so it is begining to hurt.
What do you all think? Any advice?
Best wishes as always.....
3x400mg Asacol, 3x daily
Rowasa enemas
Bee propolis
Flora-Q (probiotic)
Tylenol, 1000mg/headaches

Increase your non-caffeinated fluid intake, that may help. The most common cause of constipation is not enough fluid intake. If that doesn't help, try a fiber supplement like Metamucil along with the water. Also, if your multi-vitamin contains iron, that could be contributing. If anemia hasn't been a problem, you might try something like Centrum Silver that doesn't contain iron.

You could try a stool softener especially if you notice they keep getting harder, do drink lots of water, that should also help.

My bum is broken....there's a big crack down the middle of it! LOL :)

yep, I would suggest the stool softener as well....

Docusate is what I used.

Are you eating enough foods and getting enough fluids?

I too would suggest coffee....tea is more constipating according to friends and family.

My guess on this whole thing is that you're reaching the low in rectum inflammation stage (healing from up to down)....keep on using the enemas, and when your symptoms improve, start tapering them.

You could try inserting the nozzle into the rectum and starting to squeeze...withdraw it to the very edge of the anus so that you get medication there. Keep pushing it into the rectum again and finish inserting the med.

You could also try sitting a bit or laying on your back to keep the med more localised.

You are progressing in a positive way.....been there after a long flare, and I discovered I much preferred a loose stool during that phase.
