Hey all,

I thought people might like to see the progress of the spinach and sunflower seeds diet.

I'll do posts so people can have something to read to make them feel better while trying the diet themselves!

First day:
I had a bit over a can of spinach and probably 5 good sized handfuls of sunflower seeds. I also ate a few pieces of sourdough toast with sunbutter on it. BMs were probably about 5 with a bit of blood in each. Very gurgley stomach.

Only meds taken were Asacol 2 3 times a day, and a probiotic.

Second day:
I woke up with a stomachache and had a BM. Lots of spinach and just a little bit of blood. This was my only BM that day - which made me feel great! Gurgley stomach.

I ate the rest of the first day's can of spinach, and for dinner I sauteed some fresh spinach with garlic and sunflower seeds and ate it with a baked potato. I also ate 5 good handfuls of seeds, and more sourdough toast with sunbutter.

Overall I was feeling better from day one.

Same meds as previous day.

Third day:
I again woke up with a stomachache and had a BM. Again lots of spinach and a little bit of blood. I then had another BM about 45 minutes later with a bit of urgency but no blood. I felt gassy and gurgley most of the day but was again feeling better than the previous day.

My food intake was the exact same as the day before - down to the baked potato ha!

Fourth Day:
I woke up feeling just fine! A bit gurgley but no BM!

I ate a spinach omelette for breakfast and had a few handfuls of sunflower seeds before leaving the house.

After a few errands I then had a BM which was actually a bit more solid than other days. Lots of spinach and just a small amount of blood.

For dinner I had a steak sandwich and french fries. Probably not the best idea. I felt extremely gassy the rest of the night but still no more BMs.

Same meds as the other days.

Fifth Day:
So far I have just gotten out of bed. Stomach is really gurgley and a bit bloated but I havent had to go yet which is nice.

Had first BM about an hour after waking up. No blood in toilet, but blood on the TP. Stomach still gurgley but feeling okay at the moment!

I have eaten sunbutter and spinach so far this morning. Today is a mildly stressed day as I'm a realtor and I have a deal going under contract today. So I had 2 more BM one with some D.

Ive had a few more gassy BM so far today ugh. Worst day in awhile. Stomach is hurting but I'm going to keep to the diet of course.

I ate a bunch more sunflower seeds and I'm half way through my can of spinach for the day.

(This is it so far Ill update every day)

I'm hoping this will help others struggling with this diet.

Good luck to all!

Jeff

I'm glad you're doing this.  I'm planning to write a full description of my experience once I'm in remission (which is close) and off meds.  Its fun to chart your progress along the way.  If you're feeling lathargic and weak like I was, I think you're going to be pleasantly surprised at the jolt of energy you have coming.  For me it kicked in around the 3rd-4th week.  It felt like someone breathed life back into me.  Good luck and keep posting!

Katie, 30.   Chicago 'burbs.

Diet/Exercise:  Spinach/sunflower and low-residue.  Yoga, walking, cardio.
Previous Treatment:  Canasa suppositories, Cortifoam, Prednisone, Colazal, Symex DuoTabs, Rowasa, Bentyl, Cortenema.
Status:  Heading to remission???

How about keeping your diary on the "Spinach and Sunflower Seeds" thread. It's often confusing when there are two active threads about the same subject.

Judy - I just thought I'd do a separate one so that it wouldnt get too cluttered in with the other thread. The other one is more for people asking about the diet. I thought mine could be about my personal experience with the diet.

I just dont want it to get glossed over for those who need help and are thinking of trying this.

Hopefully that makes sense I'm only half awake ;)

Also Ill keep all my updates in the original post.

And to answer the earlier question before all this I was going 5-10 times in a day, had a hard time leaving the house and had a lot of painful gas. Ive never had really bad blood with a flare but I did have enough to turn the toilet paper red and a few drops in the bowl.

Im not sure if its the excitement of the whole thing but I do already feel more energized.
