I saw my GI on Tuesday and I mentioned how I was cramping pretty bad some mornings.  He prescribed me Bentyl 10mgs but I have a couple of questions.  I know this is a rather low dose but if I take it in the morning as he instructed, will it make me super tired??  Also, does Bentyl also help with rectal spasms?  I sometimes have them after I go to the bathroom and it gets a little painful.  It doesn't last long though, thankfully.

Also, I went to my primary yesterday because my fingers of my right hand have been swelling, stiff and sore.  My pointer finger of my left hand has been hurting again.  This is one of the main reasons I haven't been around lately because it hurts to type.  But I found out that the fingers on my right hand have osteoarthritis.  My finger joints are starting to get misshapen but unfortunately my doc said there is not much she can do for them because of me having Uc she can not prescribe any anti-inflammatories (which I knew).  As for my left finger, my trigger finger was acting up again so she gave me another steroid injection.  But now I am wondering what my future will hold with the arthritis in my fingers.  Will it spread?  Will it become worse?  Will I have to stop doing EVERYTHING I enjoy???? On one hand I am happy to KNOW what is wrong with those fingers but on the other hand, I'm a bit depressed about it.  sad

Bentyl was one of the perscriptions i was given first.  It didn't make me tired at all, but did make me feel a bit 'loopy'.  Unfortunately it didn't work for me so i just stopped taking it.

Hopefully it will work for you!

My experience was the same as Erin's - I wasn't tired, just kinda loopy and blah.  It is supposed to help with spasms - I'm assuming that would include rectal.  It didn't do much for me, though.

Hi Sherry...sad to hear you've yet got more to deal with with no break as of yet.

The Bentyl makes my eyes a bit relaxed, but definitely helps the rectal cramping...10mg is the dosage I used for 15 years.

It shouldn't make you tired if you're up and about....

You might be a candidate for Remicade considering all what you're dealing with...maybe give it a consideration?

Hope the Bentyl works for you.

Well I took the Bentyl and I do feel a bit loopy but not bad. Maybe a tad tired but that can be because I had to wait around the house all day for Mother Waddles to come and get our car that I donated. My gut feels more settled so maybe it will work for me.

Q - how often do you take yours? I was told by my GI to take it every morning, which is when I have the most cramping. But should this be something used long term?

My Uc is fairly under control (except for the occasional cramp) and OA is not immune related so I don't think that the Remi would be a good option right now. I will hold off on that unless I get some other form of arthritis that IS immune related. Then it would be 2 birds with 1 stone kind of thing.

Hi Sherry...happy to hear it calmed your gut. I've used it for almost 20 years, so I guess I can say that would be long-term.

I use it at least once a day...but I have used it up to 3 times on occasion.

You could use it at night before bedtime and see if that helps with the cramping. It could relax you enough to help sleep anyway...especially when you're tired.

You'll eventually figure out when you need it.

Sucks about the OA..I can relate somewhat.

Hope you feel better soon..keep me posted about the Bentyl.
