Since I had the flu and was running a fever, I ended up going to the Emergency room this morning. The nurse there I guess hasn't learned or experienced the difference of IBS and IBD. When she was passing on my information to the nurse taking over her patients, she was mentioning that I have a history of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. I had to correct her since IBS and IBD are different. I thought nurses would understand the difference, or just haven't met up with enough patients with IBD.

HA, you did well to see the funny side. I recently came across a booklet about coping with UC. The blurb referred to UC as being an Irritable Bowel Disease (eh)? Actually, perhaps in my case that's right - I do get very irritable about these mistakes. lol.

Believe it or not, I have a couple of nurse friends that don't know the difference either! And one of them is the head nurse for the ER. I have run into many of doctors too that I've had to explain what I can have and what I can't have or do. So I think they just touch base on it but they don't go into details when they are learning the stuff or they're asleep in class that day!

One good thing though, my doctor in the ER told me that she noticed that I was diagnosed with UC. She didn't label it with IBS or IBD. She even asked what medicine I can take with the medicine I'm on for the UC. :-)

ha ha ha, Maybe the nurse was not all wrong, my bowel are pretty irritated when I flare.
Dx:  UC Proctitis 2006
Meds:  None so far. Garlic works to ease flares. My GI laughed when I told him and said it was just coincidence.
Started Meds:  Apr 9 08 500mg 5ASA (salofalk) to ease flare, tapering, stopped.
Diet:  Regular fresh garlic, Biobest yogurt daily, Omega 3 supplements, very limited junk food, carbs and processed food, low fat diet.  Lots of fresh fruit and veggies (limited potatoes).
 Added: tumeric and probiotics.
