I'm interested to find out from those of you who started out with Proctitis, whether or not your UC got worse over time and eventually spread to other parts of the colon.  I currently have Proctitis and I remain on Asacol and Rowasa daily, but wonder if even though I remain diligent about controlling my current condition, is it likely to get worse?  I know UC is unpredictable and everyone is different, but I'd love to hear from anyone who could share their experiences in this regard.

Yup, mine started out as proctitis and eventually worsened with a few remissions in between. Had UC symptoms for 9 years. I'm now symptom/drug free. It is hard to predict what may happen to you. How long have you had UC symptoms? Have you tried a diet change? Just wondering, do you drink diet soda, or eat foods with artificial sweeteners (nofat, lo-fat, or no-sugar added foods?)

I've had UC for 5 years now. I had my first flare in 2003 and was pretty much symptom, almost drug free until November 2007. Then all hell broke loose and I had a really bad flare. Had to go on Prednisone for about 7 months, but finally got off of it. I continue with the Asacol and Rowasa. Results from my colonoscopies (2003 and 2008) were both the same, Proctitis, so it's not spreading so far. I often wonder, though, how I can have so much pain and so many problems if it just affects a small part of my colon. That's why I worry about it spreading.

I avoid fatty foods and carbonated drinks. They seem to be the only things that I can really identify as affecting me one way or the other. Oh, I always tend to get a little worse around my period. From the other posts, I've tried limiting sugar and artificial sweetners, but can't say yet if it has any significant effect.

How long did you have proctitis before it spread? How did you manage to get yourself symptom and drug free? Wish I could do that again.

I started out with proctosigmoiditis in 2001 and it hasn't progressed at all. I was actually in flare until 2006, but still just proctosigmoiditis. This disease has a mind of its own, and is different for each of us.

An antifungal program did it for me. It was trial and error. I had no expectations when I tried it, but learned UC symptoms could have a fungal etiology. Within a month I was significantly better. I still stay away from yeasty foods, and reduce sugar (hard to do with Halloween candy laying around!) and grains in my diet. I also take probiotics and beta-glucan faithfully.
