For the past couple of months I have been having painful bloating.  It looks like I am pregnant.. I'm not.  Anyway, I can't suck it in because it hurts so badly and it also hurts to press on the lower "colon" area.  Is this just very painful gas and cramping?  It hurts so bad I have to take vicodin!  My stomach will get very distended and painful and then sort of go away some and then come back the same way.  I'm tired of looking fat.. not to mention sick of the pain!! Does this happen to anyone else?  What do you do for it?  Thanks!
CARA  31 years  (female)
Medications:
Humira
Lialda 2 pills a day
Prilosec OTC
Vicodin/Tramadol as needed
Phenergran/Zofran as needed
Cortifoam
Viactiv Calcium Chews

Cara, I have painful bloating as well. I do take my acidophlis probiotic daily as well as psyillum husks and multi enzyme and the other stuff listed. However, I find it happens most to me when I am stressed. For example, tuesday night when I broke down on the interstate, my stomach immediately started cramping, rumbling, and rolling and the bloating started and I thought omg is this going to stop! And I too look like I'm pregnant, but at 51 I better not be! LOL Being a Grandmother is the best!

Hope this helps.

Ugh, that's the worst feeling. I try to take gas-x when I feel it coming on, but I'm sure that doesn't reach the gut. The probiotics made it worse at first, but now I'm lots less grumbly and bloated.
49 year old female attorney, diagnosed UC/pancolitis 1985, no surgery but much suffering.
Asacol/5ASA 6x400 mg maintenance for 20+ years; use prednisone & Rowasa for flares.
August 2008 sought care of naturopathic doctor. Food sensitivity test showed gluten, other intolerances; started diet without gluten, soy, dairy, tomato etc. Replete probiotic first, then Forte pills.
Achieved remission for the first time in many, many years!? Seemed so, but colonoscopy Oct. 6 proved not so, heavy inflammation in ascending colon & will be using Rowasa again. But I AM better.

I've got the same problem right now.. I feel really bloated and I too can't suck in my stomach, and it hurts all the way through to my back. Definitely not fun :( I feel like if I was just able to go to the bathroom it'd be better, but I've gone at least 10 times since I woke up and it still hurts.

Female, 23, Ulcerative colitis (pancolitis) since 1999; GERD; gastritis; osteopenia in femur head & lumbar spine from long term prednisone use...

Current Meds:
Lexapro 10mg, Sulfasalizine 3000mg/day, Azasan 100mg

I agree with Mike. Bloating and gas are a function of poor digestion, food sensitivities and an overgrowth of bad gut flora. Check out Elson Haas' book The False Fat Diet to learn more about the major offending foods and elimination diets. Once you identify the foods that affect you the most and eliminate them, and take supplements/probiotics to improve digestion and rebalance the gut, bloating and pain will improve.
Diagnosed with ulcerative colitis spring 1999.

Maintenance dose sulfasalazine.
Probiotics, l-glutamine and fish oil caps. George's aloe vera juice. Oregano oil antibiotic, antiviral, antifungal. Long-term remission with only minor blips.

princesa, don't forget that stress can exacerbate IBS...and those with IBD and IBS can suffer regardless of what they eat.

I would suggest taking the probiotics at night, the metamucil after supper and smaller amounts of digestive enzymes. Sometimes, they can cause a faster moving digestive process with more gas.

Of course...not eating foods that one knows won't cause gas helps immensely!
