My doctor will not be in until Monday, and until then they have left me on Anucort suppositories. I have taken them for about three weeks with no improvement. I am going to the bathroom about 1-2 times a day-soft kinda broken movements. I see blood all on them, it is def. red in color. If the doc puts me on Rowasa (or something similar on Monday) how long does it seem to take before it works? For those that have tried it for the same reason, how much blood do you see and how are your BM's (haha great question I know) I am in college right now and stress is killing me and this now being hung over my head is adding to it....I need some hope. Also has anyone tried cyclosporine? My GI is thinking about trying it on me.....I am currently maxed out on Lialda and he thinks it might barely be holding me-he tells me there are some risks with these immunosuppressors, can anyone tell me what some could be?

In the mean time i am off to the Florida/south carolina game at the swamp!

Hi....truly, I don't think you're any where needing immunosuppressant meds.

Get on the Rowasa, use them nightly.

Is your UC diagnosis throughout your colon?

It seems right now your flare is limited to the rectum....hang tough...

You could add a fibre supplement to the mix to bulk up the stool a bit..make it soft, but "fluffier"...lol! maybe easier to expel.

Stress of college/university would be high...I would think that while you have the stress, you'll have some sort of gastro symptoms.

If you're having discomfort gut-wise, ask your doc for antispasmodics.

Thanks quincy, I believe my UC is left sided (not 100%) I know it comes all the way up the left side and then slightly across the top, not quite to mid line. I do not see to have stomach pains yet, I am scared they might come though. Even before I saw blood, my lower end would feel some discomfort.......I dont know if I am expecting a miracle out of Rowasa, but I sure hope it works. OOOO the pleasures of UC!

both ends approach, and eventually you'll learn to treat your flares early...long before you start to bleed.

The pleasures of UC....yeah....but it can be a better experience if you are successful (and are able to) use the 5ASA oral/rectal route.

I always use Rowasa and it generally will put you into remission within a few weeks. If not that, it will at least to calm the colon down enough in the meanwhile for the oral meds to treat the top of your colon. I recommend using it even after you are not flaring, every-time I stop for a while I flare again so be smart and work it in every other day or every three days at the very least. It is best to keep monitoring it because you usually never know what the beginning of a flare is like. Trust me they sneak up on you and you never quite know what to look for. Play it safe like Quincy says and use the both ends method.

I too think you will see improvement with rowasa. I don't know why doctors don't prescribe them for everyone right off the bat.

Don't follow sports myself, but there are lots of gator fans down here in the southern part of the state too.
UC diagnosed 10/05, first symptoms 1983
asacol 12/daily and rowasa as needed
Trying out Culturelle Probiotic
past rx: colozal, lialda, canasa
i can't complain, but sometimes i still do.  lifes been good to me so far.  -joe walsh
