Going to post this in the UC section as well.
I got a letter today from the public board of health for my county stating that I need to call them asap(monday i guess) because I have salmonella. Not quite sure what to think, and of course its on a frigging saturday so I can't call anyone that can tell me whats going on.
I starting feeling very sick late in september, was running a fever, had major stomach pain/bleeding, diareha, joint pain, mental confusion, EXTREME fatigue to the point where i passed out at work and I was rushed to the hospital. From the point i started getting sick to that point was about 5 days. Spent 7 days in hospital with them assuming my colitis/chrons was flaring up which makes sense. I started to feel better on the pred, more energy, colitis/chrons symptoms fading, etc. I made it down to 10 mg of pred and then I started to get a 'flare' again and started running a fever, had extreme fatigue, pain, the works. Contacted doctor and we increased my pred up again. He did a colonoscopy right away to determine if i was experiencing refractory colitis/chrons. The results came back with mild/moderate inflammation from the cecum to the transverse colon. He said he thought the 6mp and pred were working because the inflammation was mild..so get off the steroids and that was that. I am back down to 10 mg of pred as of thursday, and since yesterday I've started getting the extreme fatigue, chills, joint pain,... AGAIN! So then today I get the letter stating I have salmonella which is where I am at now.
Ok. I know that most cases of salmonella resolve themselves within 7 - 14 days. I am outside the scope of that grace period. I am also immunosupressed on 6mp and prednisone. I am assuming they found the salmonella in the cultured stools from when I was in the hospital which was way back in september. Any idea why would it take so long for me to be notified? I wonder why my dr wasn't aware of this. I guess having salmonella and colitis/chrons needs to be treated through contradictory measures..one needs the immune system...the other needs the immune system supressed..what to do in the meantime? I know being immunosupressed can cause me to get even sicker and allow the salmonella to enter my blood stream and effect my organs which is life threatening. I am really hoping someone else has been in my situation. I don't know how sick i'll get in my current state before Monday rolls around. I also don't know if the salmonella is still active, or if im symptomatic of chrons/colitis or even pred withdrawal. Ugh. I am having such a bad year!!!
I suppose I will play it by ear and if gets really bad ill go to the ER for the 5th time this year.
Anyone got any thoughts?
UC/Chrons since age 22, now 27. Several huge flares since then. Entire colon diseased at some point from cecum to rectum. Also had previous inflammation in terminal ileum.
Currently tapering prednisone(12.5 mg from 80 mg). Also just starting 6mp again(75 mg) and lialda.
