hey everyone- so I have been singing Metamucil's praises for a long time now- but I can't get the fiber wafers anymore! So I switched to Benefiber, the dissolving powder, which is going ok. I've been using the Benefiber daily for about 2 weeks now. For the past 5-6 days, I have had gas like never in my life! It's just gigantic huge bubbles moving around inside, & when they finally come out it's... it's just bad. It comes out with such force there is always mucous, sometimes a little blood with it. At first I thought it was caused by something I ate, but the gas is there EVERY DAY, regardless of what food I ingest. I am also due for an infusion in 10 days, so it could just be the UC starting to rear up as the last infusion wears off. But gas has never been a predominant UC symptom for me- even in the worst of times, my gas was minimal. So, I'm thinking the culprit is the new fiber supplement- now aren't you supposed to just wait it out & your body eventually adjusts? OK- how long will it take? It's to the point where I get so distracted & annoyed by the discomfort that I can barely keep it together! When will this stop????? And do you guys think the gas is due to the Benefiber? I'm buying some super strength Gas-X today because I just can't deal with this- the Metamucil wafers did not cause me any gas, so who knows.

i get the same symptoms you do. i take whole psyllium husks only once a day and my farts reverberate all throughout my two story house! i also get the expelled mucus so of course i have to be sure to be on the toilet when the countdown timer runs out. i keep thinking these explosions aren't helping the mucosa to heal.

Proctosigmoiditis up to 25 cm
Colazal 3 caps 3 times a day
Hydrocortisone enemas AM and PM for next two weeks
Canasa suppository for lunch (for my butt)
Rowasa enemas nightly after hydrocort enema regimen is completed
Celexa 20mg daily
Fish oil, milk thistle, Ultimate Flora critical care probiotic, Alive multivitamin, lysine
Spinach and sunflower seed plan

It's completely normal and it happens to healthy people as well, just keep using it everyday and once your system adjusts, the excess gas will go away, it took my system 3 months to adjust with having excess gas and bloating, but it was well worth it, no more bloating and just a very little bit of gas.

I don't know if using Gas-x will help or not because your excess gas is basically a result of the fibre supplement, you could try and see, but don't give in, just let em blow, it will get better.

3 months?!?!?! ugh, I was hoping the adjustment period was a week or so... I do plan to continue with it, because it definitely helps with more formed & less frequent bm's. I did try Gas-X today, & it helped for a couple hours but now the bubbles are back, just burbling around inside. The worst of it is passing the mucous- I've been going thru like 4 panty liners a day! Gosh, if it's not one thing it's another! rolleyes

It took me 3 months, but I'm sure that it varies for each person, it may very well take less time for you or it may even take longer...try those chewable tums, I nevver had any success with gas-x but on rare occassion when I got really gassy the chewable tums worked very well for me.
