After my colonoscopy on friday, I was told it was in the lower part of the bowels. Can anyone tell me what their experience is with it and what meds did they get prescribe to them. I don't have too many flare ups ,so that is a good thing..And I do the spinach and sunflower seeds almost daily and I know that is what is keeping it good..

I do, rectal area and left sided colitis. I first was diagnosed back in 1986. I was put on Azulfidine pills and Rowasa enemas. Periodically I have flareups and have to go back to the doctor. I am pretty much in remission and my flares are not that often although this time I have had two now in a couple of months. I was changed from the Azulfidine to Asacol 400mg several years ago and take 3- 2X a day. I am experiencing unfortunately some on and off urgency issues with rectal bleeding as we speak.

In the past I have also used the Canasa 1000mg suppositories. They were ineffective in my past flare however. Did not reach where the inflammation was. This flare has me totally stressed out as did the other recently. But this one is more so. I am sure I am going to have to call the doctor back again as I cannot even make it to the bathroom. But unfortunately they won't just call me in the Rowasa enemas most times and require me to come back in even though I was just in there 3 weeks ago, and many of the pharmacies do not stock the enemas all the time and have to order them.

This disease is not pleasant and it can elevate your stress levels so be glad you don't have many problems right now.
Diagnosed with left sided UC in sigmoid colon and rectum 1986.
Put on Azulfidine 2 X 3 a day and Rowasa enemas 60mg.
Have been pretty much in remission overall other than a few flares over the past 21 years.
Medicine changed to Asacol 400mg 2 pills X3 times a day. Taken off all meds in 2004.
Diagnosed with acid reflux 2005. Put on Protonix 40mg.
Have been using Canasa 1000mg suppositories nightly since January 2007.
Was put back on Asacol 400mg 2 pills 2X a day in July 2007 maintenance.

Yes!  In June a colonoscopy showed left-sided and rectal UC.  Used Colazal, Lialda, Rowasa and Canasa - trying each until side effects caused me so many problems.  However, the medications worked.  Another scope 3 weeks ago showed "confined to rectal area" and I am using Procotofoam to avoid the mesalamine drugs.  If I could use them I woudl continue with Rowasa.  I do believe it helped the most in that area.  No blood now and feel nearly in remission.

My UC is located in the rectum.  In remission for two weeks now ..yippeee...after a seven month flare.  I believe my GI doctor increasing the prednisone to 40 mgm to jump start my treatment did the trick this time.  He usually only starts with 30 mgm.  Of course I was only on the 40 mgm for one week then tapered.  I was on Cort enemas along with Canasa suppositories too.  Increased my 6MP to 75 mgm and Colazal (now down to six per day).  Hang in there, you'll get better.

Update 11/03/08...finally in remission!!  Hope I don't jinx myself.  Off the prednisone since 11/01/08...now see if I can stay off for longer than two weeks.  Other meds: 6MP (75 mgm), colazal (6 per day), Benicar and Toprol (high blood pressure meds), Probiotic (2 per day), fish oil capsule and multi-vitamin and calcium with vitamin D.

Susie - your post made me think about something a friend said to me when I told her I could not eat certain food and ate very light even in Vegas. She said it was too bad I could not enjoy eating!

I told her the sacrifice was worth not having the pain in the gut and all the other symptoms of UC.  Life is full of choices!  I prefer quality of life so I choose to eat what I know will agree with me.  I also have IBS so have to be even more careful!
