Has it helped?
Which strains (its important!) are you taking and how many daily?
Taking pre-biotics?
Do you believe UC is caused by messed up gut flora?

No one knows what causes UC.  I did have a family doctor who prescribed me erythromycin for just about everything and it may be the root of why I have UC now...who knows.
I do take powerdolphilus (probiotic), one capsule twice a day and a fish oil capsule too..once a day.  Not sure if they are helping or it is the combination of EVERYTHING I took to finally reach this remission.  I am hoping I stay in remission for a LOOOONG time.

Update 11/03/08...finally in remission!!  Hope I don't jinx myself.  Off the prednisone since 11/01/08...now see if I can stay off for longer than two weeks.  Other meds: 6MP (75 mgm), colazal (6 per day), Benicar and Toprol (high blood pressure meds), Probiotic (2 per day), fish oil capsule and multi-vitamin and calcium with vitamin D.

My doctor gave me samples of Align (www.aligngi.com) before I had any idea what a probiotic was.  I have taken it now for months and tried one other but went back to Align because of so much gas.  It helped right away so I don't need to fix what isn't broken.  It is especially for treatment of IBS which I have also.  It does have sugar and some other ingredients we could all do without but I am sticking with it for now.

Thanks for all the answers guys!

What Im really interested in is which strains you guys are taking. I know its a pain and its listed on the backs of whatever you're taking. I found that when I took a probiotic with only 2 strains (acidophilus and rhamnosus) it did not help me. When I took one with 12 strains I actually went in remission immediately.

Im also taking VSL#3 which is a HUGE dose of 8 strains. I almost think that some people who say probiotcs had no effect were not taking the right strains.

Sorry I don't know or understand anything about "strains".  Align does not have anything about "strains" on package or website (that I could find).  It firmed up my stool in about 2 weeks and no diarrhea for months now.  That is really all I care.  Hope you get the info you need and the product you need.

I take Primadophilus reuteri, which has L. acidophilus, L. rhamnosus and L. reuteri, 5 billion per capsule. i take 2 caps daily. The probiotic didn't put me into remission, but helps to keep my stools more solid and wards off the yeast infections from immunosuppressants.

Yes, for me probiotics were a godsend. They help me achive remission months ago.

Sorry i dont have the bottle here with me atm to list the types of bacteria. Acidophilus is a key player though. But i took about 50 billion CFU's daily.

I took pre-biotics for a bit didnt see an improvement.

Yes I believe UC is caused by messed up gut flora or within that realm.

100 years from now, or perhaps even 30 or 40 or 50, who knows- and of course, assuming some nutjobs haven't nuked or bio-terrored most of the human race to extinction- we will have definitive answers to exactly which strains we need as individuals... as we decode our individual genomes and those of various bacterial species. We all seem to react very individually to probiotics, and prebiotics for that matter. One persons potion is another's poison, and vice versa. It takes trial and error- and lots of it. My own guess, however, is that taking and even rotating multiple probiotics are better than trying to find some "magic" brand or type. A healthy gut flora is composed of hundreds, perhaps thousands of species, many still only being discovered and catalogued now as the technology becomes available. My two cents.

I was asking about the strains since it seems that some have been linked as important in regards to UC and I only noticed help once I started taking those strains and in large (50 billion and more quantities)

Heres some info from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Probiotics

Bifidobacterium lactis - Immune stimulation
Lactobacillus acidophilus - prevents bacterial overgrowth in small intestine <- I can see why this is important
Lactobacillus casei - immune stimulation, reduction of duration of winter infections, H. pylori eradication
Lactobacillus plantarum - IBS, used post-operative, immune stimulation <- this one is important for UC included in 299V preparation
Lactobacillus rhamnosus - Immune stimulation, prevents diarrhoea
Lactobacillus salivarius - positive effects with intestinal ulcers and inflammation <-Good
Streptococcus thermophilus - positive effects with intestinal ulcers and inflammation <- very good (included in VSL#3 preparation)

It also seems many of these strains work as a team. I am taking all of these strains and more, I would recommend to anyone who is finding Probiotcs dont work that they try another Probiotic with these strains.

Thanks for all your feedback everyone, you guys are much nicer and informative than those stiffs at http://www.ulcerativecolitis.org.uk who ended up deleting my posts cause I was aking too much.. sigh

Here is what you guys told me so far:

kops2da - you seem to be taking a single strain Bifidobacterium infantis- Align claims that this strain is crucial in a health gut flora

Judilyn - L. acidophilus, L. rhamnosus and L. reuteri - I must admit I have never heard of L. reuteri nor ahve I seen it sold anywhere. Where did you get this strain???

mh53mike - you are taking VSL#3. That one has 8 strains Bifidobacterium breve, Bifidobacterium longum, Bifidobacterium infantis, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus paracasei, Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Streptococcus thermophilus. Many of the ones I listed up there.

Probiotic - you seem to have quite a good variety with Primal Defence - Lactobacillus plantarum, Bacillus subtilis, Lactobacillus brevis, Bifidobacterium breve, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Lactobacillus paracasei, Lactobacillus salivarius, Lactobacillus casei, Bifidobacterium lactis Bifidobacterium longum, Lactobacillus acidophilus , Lactobacillus rhamnosus. How many billion are you taking daily? You also have 1 I never saw sold where I live - Bacillus subtilis.

Me - same as mh53mike and also included Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Lactococcus Lactis, Lactobacillus salivarius and Lactobacillus Helveticus.

With so many beneficial strains I think the best is to go for variety.
Waiting to see if I'm cured

Probiotics 14 strains (vsl#3 + ultimate multi probiotic) - 475 billion per day. Pre-biotics 1x a day. No sugar.
L-glutamine, elm powder, vit b & folic acid

I would like to add that I tried Primal Defense recommended to me by a friend with Crohns.  I tried it twice in smallest doses but it gave me so much gas that would not go away and kind of "sicky" feeling so I went back to Align whic seems to work as far as forming stool - don't know what else it does.  I am not in remission but close probably due to rectal meds.  Having IBS and GERD also causes digestive problems, gas, nausea, bloating - you got it.

Thats not suprsing to hear. I have had a few upsetting symptoms as my colon seemed to be 'rebalancing' and even now I have more gas than usual. At first I thought I could not take them since all I seemed to have was diarrhea! But at lest it showede me there was an effect happening.
Waiting to see if I'm cured - no symptoms since probiotics started

Probiotics 16 strains (vsl#3 + ultimate multi probiotic) - 475 billion per day. Pre-biotics 1x a day. No sugar.
