Hi All - I just wanted to share that today I had my check-up colonscopy and I was expecting good results - and I got them.  My Doc was very surprised to find very little inflammation - the little that was there is probably due to the prep because before yesterday's prep I had no blood or other symptoms.  I have been following the spinach/seed diet and in remission because of it since about late June.  Amazing for me because prior to that I was never in remission and was facing going to heavier meds.  So once again I really have to thank everyone on this forum for support and CfromUtah for sharing the spinach/seed thing.

I'm so happy for you!!!  I really need to get my butt in gear and try the diet.  It sounds like the people it works for are the ones who share the same symptoms as me as far as never really reaching remission prior to the diet.  I'm not sure if I can handle canned spinach but I could probably do frozen.

Congrats on remission!  Hey, I missed this whole spinach/sunflower seed diet discussion... does someone have the link to the original thread or threads handy? Thanks.

I swear by my ceasar salad diet, I know romaine doesn't have as much magnesium as spinach, but I do know the results when I was on NO meds and started noticing that my flare was slightly better after eating it. I thought it was the garlic of course. If I didn't eat the salad for 24 hours, it would get worse again.

Dx:  UC Proctitis 2006
Meds:  None so far. Garlic works to ease flares. My GI laughed when I told him and said it was just coincidence.
Started Meds:  Apr 9 08 500mg 5ASA (salofalk) to ease flare, tapering, stopped.
Diet:  Regular fresh garlic, Biobest yogurt daily, Omega 3 supplements, very limited junk food, carbs and processed food, low fat diet.  Lots of fresh fruit and veggies (limited potatoes).
 Added: tumeric and probiotics.

That is great news. Earlier this summer I tried the sunflower seeds for 2 weeks and was feeling back to NORMAL, yes, NORMAL in 2 weeks. I couldn't do the spinach but was eating I believe 8 oz of sunflower seeds a day, thats all it took. It didn't last long enough for me before I got stuck back in a rut. I started snacking on carrots (bad idea) and they screwed me up. Went back to seeds and couldn't stomach them. So here I am now months later on my 2nd or so day of seeds and am bound and determined to start feeling better. I'm gonna start eating spinach and eggs for breakfast as well. I CAN DO THIS! and so can you!

Thats all, sorry didn't want to jack your thread but I am very happy your off meds and its working for you!

I see the links to this diet thread have been reposted- thanks for that. In any case, I know that I cannot eat seeds without flaring, but that nut butters of all sorts also cause me to flare. Furthermore, magnesium gives me D. That said, I am always willing to try things and plan to go buy some sunflower butter, and start with a tiny teaspoonful. I already eat spinach from time to time and tolerate it. Typically, I microwave fresh spinach. I know, nutriotnally I should steam or boil it, and will do so if I try this diet.

I have not done and am not currently doing this diet, but I also only recently stumbled on the discussion and here are links to three past threads... I may be missing at least one thread.

Microwaving veggies apparently does not remove any more nutrients than boiling if cooked to the same tenderness.

Great news!! I'm so glad to hear your results! And thanks for posting this. I hope it encourages other members to try the diet. I've had so much success with it, and it makes me so sad to read other posts about how much some people are suffering. Unfortunately I know some allergies and intolerances prevent some from doing it, but those who can should definitely give it a shot for a month.

Not to hijack the thread, but this depends on which nutrients.  Minerals are not affected, but anti-oxidants can be.  I have seen this sttudy cited alot re. broccoli as an example:

Has anyone found a sunflower seed butter without added sugar or other junk? The only brand I found today was "sunbutter" and it has dehydrated cane juice in it- that stuff would flare me real good.  I guess one could grind one's own if worse comes to worse.
