I have my colonoscopy on monday morn so will be doing the god awful prep on sunday. I have klean-prep and picolax. I only have 2 saches of it and the instructions say I also need to drink a bottle of senokot syrup, should the doctor have given me the syrup too or do I need to buy it myself? How many laxative drinks etc does everyone else have to drink before a prep? Just want to make sure I do it right. Also I have been told I can eat vanilla icecream the day before even though you're not supposed to eat, has anyone else done this?

All of that is new to me and I've never been told that I could eat vanilla ice cream the day before. My GI had me take Dulcolax pills at 10 a.m. and then at noon mix miralax w/ gatoraide (gatoraide couldn't be the red or orante) and drink 8 ounces of that ever 30 minutes until I finished it.

Hope all goes well for you on Monday - hey the bright side is you'll be all cleaned out and ready for all the food Thanksgiving Day!

If you're in the US, Senokot is over the counter and you should be able to get it at your local pharmacy.

I've always been on clear liquids the day before surgery - that means only things you can see through, like juice, jello, broth. But it surely would be nice to be able to have ice cream! I hate the clear liquid diet.

I get colonoscopies every two years, and every time I seem to get a different prep. The last time it was clear liquids the day before, dulcolax tabs the afternoon before and then Miralax and enough fluid to make me sick. I'd recommend following your doctor's instructions, which I hope were detailed. And yes, the prep is rough, but for me the drugs they give for the actual procedure have always made it almost worth the prep.

Well I have been doing my prep today but I have a little problem.
I took 5 senokot this morning and the whole sache of picolax this afternoon. Made me gag but I struggled my way through it.
Tonight I have had to drink Klean-prep, i dissolved the packet in 2 pints of water (9 glass fulls) I have managed to get down 7 while gagging all the way through. I have 2 glasses left but everytime I take a sip/ gulp i immediately throw it straight back up. I have been holding my nose, sucking on a mint, flavouring it with cordial and sipping another drink every time I have a mouthful of Klean prep. It's not so much the taste but it has a weird texture that just makes me sick. I don't think there is a chance in hell that I can get the rest down. I have been having diarrhoea which is pure water but not yet clear all afternoon but now I haven't been for an hour. Do you think I will have to try and force the rest down or will I be ok for the colonoscopy?

Try to get down as much as you can and then do 2 Fleets enemas before you go in tomorrow. I always have a horrible time with the prep so that's what my doctor tells me to do.

Well I have now been to toilet another 3 times so thats good. Tried to drink the remaining klean-prep again and just keep bringing it back up so I'm just going to drink tons of water and hope that helps things along. If my bm's aren't clear by morning I shall ring the hospital and see what they say.

Are you running fairly clean? If so, then just keep drinking lots of water....and best of luck with your scope tomorrow, be sure to let us know how all went when you feel up to it.

Try drinking it through a straw if you aren't already. Good luck tomorrow, then enjoy a big turkey dinner on Thursday!

Though I hate to take a painkiller on an empty stomach, I get nasty hunger headaches when starving during the prep.... and then those severe headaches will cause me to get nauseous and barf up the remaining prep. But once I take a good pain reliever for the headache, I can down the prep again. In theory, if you are chugging it out, you should take a break of 30-60 minutes before resuming the drink every 10 minutes routine. Or simply space out the drinks a bit. but once you are getting clearish, if even yellow colored, output, you are good to go, because the remaining debris won't be able to conceal the mucosa from the little air jet they use at the tip of the scope.

Just come back from my colonoscopy. I didn't drink the rest of the prep last night but turns out I didn't need to as I was all nice and clean :)
The worst part for me was the fact it took them 10 attempts to get the cannula in for the sedative and I have nice brusing coming out now, especially on the back of my hand. bloomin painful but never mind. I remember the WHOLE thing, I was watching it on the screen, was pretty interesting.
Felt slightly tipsy and chilled but that was it, didn't feel much, the only pain I had is from cramps due to all the air being pumped round. Still having bad cramping now. Anyway they said my colon looks pretty normal so thats good news but does not explain why I have had so much bleeding. My bleeding stopped again nine days ago, maybe if it hadn't they would have seen more? I don't know. Anyway they took 4 biopsies and I will get the results in 14 days time. If the biopsies show nothing up then I have NO idea why I had bleeding and mucas non stop for 2 months, any ideas?

Sounds like you were flaring to me.  When not flaring, my colon looks great too.  Doctor said hard to believe that you can be so sick and then have a clear colon afterwards, but it happens. Sounds like your prep was awful.  I always take the Nulitely, that gallon jug.  A tip if you take Nulitely next time:  for three days ahead, just eat very lightly, mostly soups.  The day of the prep, since I haven't eaten much for three days already, I only have to drink about 1/3 of the jug and I drink it icy cold through a straw.  Much easier to go down.

Update 11/03/08...finally in remission!!  Hope I don't jinx myself.  Off the prednisone since 11/01/08...now see if I can stay off for longer than two weeks.  Other meds: 6MP (75 mgm), colazal (6 per day), Benicar and Toprol (high blood pressure meds), Probiotic (2 per day), fish oil capsule and multi-vitamin and calcium with vitamin D.
