Hi....this is my first post to Healing Well.....I have had UC for almost 10 years now.....I am on Colazal, azathioprine, levsin, cholestryamine, immodium and niravam for anxiety....i have been off steroids for about 12 days now....this is the longest i have gone w/o steroids in over a year.....i have alot of mucous and gas w/o a bowel movement.....I need some suggestions on how to deal or treat this.....I know it goes along with the territory with UC.

Hi...welcome to the forum!

you could consider to ask the doc for some rectal meds.

How long is the course of pred you're on?

Add some Metamucil Smooth (not the sugar-free kind) after supper if you don't take meds then...it'll help bulk/soften up the stool.

I agree with Heather.  You could also try adding ground flaxseed to your morning cereal.  I use a tablespoon of Bob's Red Mill Whole Ground Flaxseed Meal in my Rice Krispies each morning.  You can buy it at most grocery stores.

Update 11/03/08...finally in remission!!  Hope I don't jinx myself.  Off the prednisone since 11/01/08...now see if I can stay off for longer than two weeks.  Other meds: 6MP (75 mgm), colazal (6 per day), Benicar and Toprol (high blood pressure meds), Probiotic (2 per day), fish oil capsule and multi-vitamin and calcium with vitamin D.

Hi..thanks for the replies.....I have been on and off prednisone for the past year.....i usually could only go off for about one or two weeks at most before i would flare again....i was under alot of stress at the time so my doc's said see how things go....now that my life is back to a normal time it seems my body doesn't want to get back to normal....i think all the stress over the years (i was in a bad marriage and went thru divorce, i am a single mom too)...I have tried the metamucil idea but it made me worse...i take cholestryamine for the side effect of constipation which makes me only go twice a day usually but the mucous is the worst part of it since it occurs when i have gas....so rush to the bathroom....lol

ask your doctor for rectal meds to help your flare (low in the rectum inflammation can cause constipation).

Is your UC limited or throughout?

From what I read, cholestyramine is used for diarrhea, not for constipation...I'm confused, unless your doc has given it to you for another reason?

Which metamucil did you use?

I'd suggest Rowasa retention enema if you're in the US....Salofalk retention enema if you're not.

There are also steroid retention enemas as well as foams....

Is your UC throughout your colon?

ive never heard of Cholestryamine before, is this generally used? is it something new? im just wondering why my doc never gave it to me...hmmm

as for the gas issue canasa works for me...rowasa made my mucous worse it also made me feel like i had to go to the bathroom cause i couldnt hold it in, i even tried half the bottle trying to slightly warm it etcc...everyone is different...canasa was easier for me and helped...proctofoam worked really well for me too, when times got bad canasa is what i used more often.

Kelina.....Cholestryamine is used to relieve diarrhea but was originally made to reduce cholesterol.....its a packet that you mix into a beverage or applesauce  (its orange flavored)....it has helped but I seem to be going on a downslide....I have tried the canasa and it worked when they made the 500 mg suppositories but when they stopped making it at that strength and now its 1000mg i think, it didn't help anymore....i have also tryed Rowasa and have no relief in the past.....what is proctofoam?...i have never used this...i have also tried asacol, mercaptopurine at lower doses since it makes me dizzy...my choices seem to be remicade which i am nervous about and have been thinking about surgery since a friend of mine just had it done.....but mentally i don't know if i can go there yet...the remicade makes me nervous though....
