     Hi all,
I've been off the prednisone for one month tomorrow.  Was hopping with joy.  Thanksgving came and I was a baaaaad girl.  Ate everything I probably shouldn't.  Today I have cramping and noticed some mucus in my stool.  Stools are normal and I have no diarrhea..yet..and no urgency.  Think I should go back on the rectal meds?  I also had cut my Colazal from nine a day to six a day...guess I better go back to nine...what a bummer.

Update 11/03/08...finally in remission!!  Hope I don't jinx myself.  Off the prednisone since 11/01/08...now see if I can stay off for longer than two weeks.  Other meds: 6MP (75 mgm), colazal (6 per day), Benicar and Toprol (high blood pressure meds), Probiotic (2 per day), fish oil capsule and multi-vitamin and calcium with vitamin D.

You cut them...as in down 3 without tapering?

Are you completely off the rectal meds or tapered to maintenance.

Don't worry about the food you ate...punishing yourself about every thing you eat can lead you on the path of actually believing food causes a flare. Food intake can increase bms, depending on what and how much you eat.

So you have gas and extra mucus...it comes with IBS as well...no urgency is a good thing...

I would suggest you should be on a rectal med at least once a week anyway..tapered from your treatment nightly dosage.

If your symptoms continue, then it's probably because of the pred cessation and you've had mild inflammation anyway...especially with dropping the dosage of Colazal as well as not being on any rectal meds for maintenance.

You could add Metamucil smooth to your intake as a fibre supplement. Oh, not th sugar-free kind.

Hi Heather,
I did take 3 Colazal 3 x per day.  Went into remission and cut the Colazal to 2 pills 3 x per day.  I tapered my rectal meds and was able to completely get off of them when I finished with the prednisone.  I was on Cort enemas alternate nights with Canasa.  I inserted a Canasa this morning and tonight I guess I should try a Cort enema?  See what happens tomorrow.  I took another bowel movement about 20 min ago and saw less mucus than earlier.

Considering your Thanksgiving was on Thursday and you ate lots more than you normally do...it's plausible you would have more bms for up to 3 days after the feast. Even the extra activity of the digestive tract and colon processing all the food/waste, that in itself could produce more mucus.

You cut the Colazal down too quickly (my opinion), but you can wait it out for now and increase if needed...

You could use the Canasa nightly for the week and if you don't have ANY urgency, taper them down (over a few weeks) to maybe twice a week....and use a cortenema once a week regardless for maintenance.

You are on 6MP and just off prednisone...your worry may all be for naugt, but I do understand your concerns since you were hospitalised.

Do, however, take metamucil or whatever fibre supplement to help keep the stool bulked and "fluffy"...it'll also help absorb excess mucus from IBS and you won't notice it as much.

keep us posted,

Thanks, today I am MUCH better.  Cramping went away and no mucus in stool.  Watching my diet more carefully too.  I went back to 3 colazal 3x per day and Cort enema last night.  I agree, I think I should take a Cort enema once a week for maintenance although my doctor never mentioned that.
