For those of you who are losing hair - do your hair folicles hurt/ache before they fall out?  Was just curious because I have  a spot that is doing just that.  Hair hasn't fallen out yet, but was just wondering.  I know that the asacol can cause alopecia and was just wondering.

I've been losing hair for the last month, but it doesn't hurt (unless it's the acne-like bumps on my scalp). I lost tons of hair when I was first diagnosed and it never came back! Luckily, I had really thick hair then so it didn't matter that I lost so much. But if I keep losing a lot now, it's going to be bad!

Gigi, I was loosing hair by the handfuls, but that was during my steroid days, I did not know that asacol caused it as well. Is their anything you can do about it, like adjusting your dosing? Does colazal cause hair loss as well?

Yuckygut:

I found this on asacol: Website: http://www.drugs.com/pdr/asacol.html

What side effects may occur?
Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any side effects develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor immediately. Only your doctor can determine whether it is safe to continue using Asacol.

Side effects generally include:
Diarrhea, dizziness, flu-like symptoms, gas, headache, nausea, stomach pain
Other typical side effects may include:
Abdominal pain, acne, back pain, belching, bloating, chest pain, chills, constipation, fever, HAIR LOSS, hemorrhoids, indigestion, insomnia, itching, joint pain, leg pain, liver disorders, menstrual problems, muscle pain, nasal inflammation, rash, rectal pain or bleeding, sore throat, stomach and intestinal bleeding, sweating, swelling of the arms and legs, tiredness, urinary burning, vomiting, weakness

On Colazal I found this at the same site:
Possible side effects of Colazal :
All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Diarrhea; headache; heartburn; joint or muscle pain; loss of appetite; nausea; runny or stuffy nose; stomach pain; vomiting.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:
Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); dark urine; fatigue; fever; rectal bleeding; signs of infection (eg, chills or persistent sore throat); yellowing of the skin or eyes.

I hope this helps you!

By the way yuckygut, I know you can order Haldi online, but I am afraid to order anything online because in 2005 our account was hacked into to the tune of $7,000 + Do you know what store I can purchase this? I've checked GNC and Vitamin World but they don't carryit.

I have some hair loss too.  I used some new hair dye and thought maybe that had something to do with it.  Has anyone tried Rogaine?  It isn't cheap but if it would work, I would try it.  I really don't want to wear a wig.

This has been mentioned a lot before but I would try the higher dosage of Biotin (5000mcg), found in drug stores. It really helped me.

I had a bad case of hair loss earlier this year.  At first, when it was at its worst, the whole top of my head was sore (like when you wear your hair differently than you are used to).  I had gotten a perm a couple of weeks before, so I thought it might be that, but the soreness lasted almost two months.  I now know it was from the hair loss. I started taking Biotin, which helped some.  I didn't get back to normal until I cut my Asacol dosage down again after I had upped it for a flare.  The Asacol definately was the cause. Now there is no hair loss and no soreness.

Hi...get your thyroid checkd out as well as autoimmune markers in your blood.

Are you in menopause?
Are you on any blood pressure or cholesterol meds?

There are autoimmune diseases that affect the hair follicles.

Are you losing hair just on your head or on other parts of your body such as eyelashes, brows, underarms..etc?

Have you seen a dermatologist about it?

It definitely can be the Asacol if you're sensitive to salicylates.

Do get it checked out.

Christine, Rogaine really does help hair grow but the problem with that is once you stop using it, all the new hair growth falls outs. It even tells you that on the instructions (in fine print no less!). My SIL used it and her hair was growing in beautifully but then she stopped taking it and yep her new hair fell back out.

I too highly recommend Biotin 5mgs (5000mcgs). I absolutely love the stuff. I didn't start losing hair until I started 6mp but before that I had heavy ridges in my fingernails and the Biotin got rid of that. But then when I started to lose my hair on 6mp, I hoped that it would stop and luckily it did. But I have thick hair anyway so it didn't matter if I lost some hair.

But definately rule out other ailments before assuming it's the Asacol. Because it can be something else and if it's overlooked.......well the results wouldn't be very good.

My dermatologist had me start using rogaine because of my hairloss from the Pentasa. He had me use the mens (even though I'm female) once per day. The purpose was more to stop anymore hairloss than it was to grow back lost hair. He told me to use it for six months and then I could stop. He said it might be enough to override whatever is causing my body to lose it. It has not been six months but my hair looks SO much better. I only use it every other night or so just in the places I was losing it bad. I have gone a few days without it and started losing again. The generic is not that expensive. If you buy a 3 months supply of mens rogaine and use it once /day it should last you 6 months for about $50.

He seemed to think stopping Rogaine was more of a problem for people who used it for regrowth then it is for people that used it to stop loss. You can also taper down it and use it once / week or so.

I also have bad acid reflux and have been on PPI's since age 13. I have been through prilosec, prevacid, and nexium. Currently I am on Protonix in the morning and Zantac at night. I also take a birth control pill to allow some fun in my life.

I too have had really bad hair loss in the past few months. Was on 60mg of prednisone for a bad flare, and began tapering off, and that's when hair started falling out. I would get so depressed just washing my hair, because when I would brush it, I would just pull out these huge clumps with my brush. I started taking folic acid 800mcg, biotin 5000mcg, and also started using hair masks!!! The hair masks that I used were the "Biolage Intensive Strengthening Masque" and "Neutrogena Triple Moisture Deep Recovery Hair Mask". They are both amazing!!!! and smell so good. Basically lather your hair with it after shampoo, and keep it on for about 20 min, then rinse. Has made a world of a difference!!! However, I think its a combination of the vitamins and the hair masks, because if you're lacking something on the inside, no shampoo and/or mask is going to help much. Also , I started eating more foods with protein, more chicken, eggs, etc....(Our hair is mostly composed out of protein.) Try this out guys. Hope this helps. The Neutrogena hair mask is about 6 or 7 dollars, as opposed to Biolage mask which is 16. But Biolage is my favorite:) wink

Gigi, That stinks about getting hacked into, that is one of the reasons I am always so paranoid about my social sec. number.
I initially found Haldi it at whole foods markets while on business, like in DC, and New York City. When my travelling slowed down, it was too far to go to my local whole foods so for me ordering online was easier. I even found some whole foods who didnt have it, but they ordered it when I asked them, I dont know if other places would do the same? Good luck,
