I am one of the few UC suffers that has constipation. Since I have IBS in addition to UC, my gi doctor wants me to take Miralax in small doses every night. Is this safe for the long run? I am trying to "repair" my body from years of eating crap and want to be healthy as I can be. I am not sure what else I can use in lieu of Miralax. Thanks! :)

Actually you are not in the minority. Most women with UC have constipation-based UC. I had it for 10 years before the disease switched to diarrhea-based UC.

If you can't eat more fruits and vegetables to get things moving naturally I don't think taking Miralex nightly will cause you any harm.

dx proctitis in 1987
dx UC in 1991, was stable until 1998

1998 started prednisone, asacol, pentasa, nortriptylene, ativan, 6MP, rowasa enemas and suppositories, hydrocortisone enemas, tried the SCD diet, being a vegetarian, omega 3s, flax, pranic healing, yoga, acupuncture, probiotics

2000 lost all my B-12 stores and became anemic

2001 opted for j-pouch surgery- now living life med-free

I get constipation on occasion too and if nothing else helps then I take Miralax as per my GI's instructions. Miralax is one the most gentle laxatives and if I am not mistaken, pretty harmless if taken once a day.
