Since 2005, after I was first diagnosed with Crohn's and UC, I was put on Asacol and prednisone. Until summer, I did not have regular blood. Now, I am seeing blood regularly in my stools. Is this normal? I was put on Entocort for about 6 weeks in the fall of 2008 and then the pain I had in my stomach went away. Then I was on prednisone for one month, but the blood did not go away. Is this normal? Any help would be appreciated.
27m - Dx January 2005 and given 80mg Prednisone to taper off and 12 tablets of Asacol
Normal medication: 12 tablets of Asacol daily
Right now (which is not working) after bleeding everyday in BMs: Prednisone (30mg to taper off of for 6 weeks, Azathioprine, Controloc, Potassium, Iron, Multi-Vitamin

It can be normal for an uncontrolled inflammed colon. Levels of bleeding may fluctuate. Pred should have knocked the inflammation out though enough to stop the bleeding. Sometimes it's just hard to get under control though. I can bleed in a flare for 6 months to a year here and there if it's bad enough. How much blood are you getting?

I have been losing blood since July. I had a colonoscopy in September and it was found that my colon was very inflamed. I was put on Entocort and then prednisone, but I still have blood.

Here is a pic of how much blood I get: http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee151/NosHistoriae/IMG_2248.jpg

That much blood I am probably going to cortenemas (maybe 30-40ml) twice a day, or could probably squeek by on a cort in morning or evening with a vit E enema on the opposite part of the day. The main thing is getting meds up directly to the colon instead of going the scenic route through the entire body. Where is your UC at? not listed in the sig.

I have it on my left side. What is cort? I did not really understand your post. Do you think that is a lot of blood?

I bled daily for 2.5 years until I opted for surgery. It can take a long time to get the bleeding under control. At about year 2 I became anemic and then had to supplement with iron. Just make sure your GI is informed on your current status.

I bleed pretty much every day too- sometimes it's just on the TP, other times it's on the stool, sometimes it's little bloody pieces of mucous in the toilet. I didn't look at your pic, sorry- but unless you are dripping blood daily into the toilet, & are also weak, tired, etc. I wouldn't worry too much. Of course your GI should know.
diagnosed with UC '02
meds-
Asacol- 8 tabs/day
Remicade-10mgs/kg- since 4/07
Imuran- 150mgs/day
Culturelle
Fiber supplement

That makes me feel better. How much blood do you get daily? I will try to get another pic in the future.

Some people describe turning the toilet bowl red, while others are like Eva Lou - "sometimes it's just on the TP, other times it's on the stool, sometimes it's little bloody pieces of mucous in the toilet." I fall into Eva Lou's category, although right now I don't have a bleeding problem, just really sharp pains, gas, and other annoying discomforts.

If you are really concerned, talk with your GI doc. The more open you are about stuff the better your treatment will be. I used to be hesitant about discussing this stuff with doctors (not socially acceptable), but then it occurred to me that my doc has heard it all before, and I wasn't in his office to shoot the breeze, I was there to get rid of the very things I didn't want to talk about!

It's hard to tell from the pic, but it did seem like a good bit. Cortenemas/hydrocortisone enema. Your GI should have you on rectal meds. If he hasn't mentioned it, you need to tell him to put you on them. If that were my TP I would be using rectal meds twice daily to get it under control. I haven't seen or compared blood on TP with alot of people so I can only go on what I have seen in the last 10 years. You want control before you become anemic, weak..... etc. not afterwards. I wouldn't freak out about it or anything, but I would have rectal meds before the end of the week.

Thanks for the advice. If anyone has any other descriptions of how much blood the lose, please share. I will try to take a pic tomorrow for clarification.

Thanks

Oh, I forgot to mention that I was just in the hospital and had some tests. My doctor said that the blood would be normal just like the sun setting. However, I have a problem with my small intestines or small bowel, because they are contracted.

Before I knew I had UC I was bleeding bad filling up the toilet daily with lots of blood-even passing gas I would loose blood. I thought it was hemmies which I had-but knew that much blood loss was not normal. It took me 3 months before going to the DR Was very anemic. Took months to get my levels back to normal. I dont like going to the Dr. but If I wouldnt have waited so long to go I might not have had so much trouble.Because somehow a abbcess started and I wound up in the hospital. But thats been almost 2 years ago and Im doing very good now, no bleeding no problems.

Is there actually blood IN your stool when this is happening? Or is it more on the TP and toilet water?
I get this sometimes--I think it's from my hemorrhoid or I rip my bum open--I dunno. For me it's not flare related.
When I'm actually flaring then it's blood and mucous IN the stool along with all the pain.

Judging from your picture it's just TP and toilet water--there appears to be no stool on the TP.
I think you have a tear--you should get a mirror and take a look. =) Awkward position time. Haha.

Suffered for my whole life before being diagnosed.

Salofalk
1500mg x 4/day
Entocort 6mg once a day Completely off as of 10/21/08. Took 2 years!

The blood is usually with the stool. Sometimes I just go to the washroom and have blood come out. I did not have any significant bowel movement today. So, I could not get a picture. I will try to get a picture tomorrow. I believe I remember reading that for UC and Crohn's, it is normal to have blood. However, I am not sure. Right now, I do not have any pains, diarrhea, or anything other than blood. The blood is the only problem.

I hope you guys can help me in the future (tomorrow or this week), because I am not going to see another until about 2 weeks from now. The one doctor who I talked with here recommended seeing a surgeon so he could see the results of my tests.
