Hello, my name is Billy, and I have Ulcerative Colitis. I was diagnosed with it in the Spring of 2003 at the age of 18. I originally thought that I might have colon cancer. I went to my family doctor and then went to a specialist at Vanderbilt in Nashville. I have been on Asacol, then on Colazol 3x3, and some Rowasas, now I'm on Mesalamine, which I hear is like Asacol. I found this website when I was searching for generic versions of the pill, and after reading a few posts, I see its not possible. I wish I could get my pills through the $4 generics that every store advertises about. But I guess I am lucky, I haven't had a flair up in about 3 and a half years. Well I just wanted to introduce myself.

Hi Billy, welcome to the forum!

Awesome to hear you're doing well. Is your UC throughout or limited?

Curious if there's anyone in your family who has UC or CD?

I can't help regarding the meds purchasing..

quincy
*Heather* Status..Asacol 6 (3 twice daily); enemas every 5th night
~diagnosed January 1989 UC (proctosigmoiditis)
~Bentylol (dicyclomine) 20mg as needed
~vitamins/minerals/supplements
~Probiotics....(Natural Factors Protec, Primadophilus Reuteri Pearls, Natural Factors Ultimate)....1 each  @ bedtime
~various digestive enzymes as needed
~Ranitidine (reflux);  Effexor XR 75mg(depression);  Pulmicort/Airomir (asthma)
~URSO for PSC (or PBC) 500mg X 2 daily (LFTs back to NORMAL!!)

Its limited to about 6 inches, if memory serves me correctly. I am the only one in my family with UC, my sister does have IBS though.

Just a suggestion....use the enemas at least once a week...if you start to have symptoms such as constipation, gas, stomach discomfort, continually before any bleeding starts, it's probably the start of a flare. Do make sure you start the enemas nightly at that part asap.

Be well,

Hi Billy, welcome to Hw :) Mesalamine is the generic form of Asacol. And unfortunately sometimes even the generic meds for Uc can be costly. If you can tolerate sulfa and money is tight, you can ask the doc to see if he/she will prescribe Sulfasalazine. This is alot cheaper however many people have allergic reactions to sulfa so it depends on your body.

Downs, welcome to Hw also...I suggest you create a post for yourself so you will get more responses and also so that your answers will not take away from Billy's post.
