I'm currently taking antibiotics for UTI but I'm on no meds from my uc b/c I don't have blood, only mushy and no urgency. What meds would you suggest to keep the inflammation a bay or should I not take any at all?
I go to my GI on  Weds next week, what questions should I ask if any? It's just a routine consult.
First scope 7/05 should no UC, but I was bleeding with urgency. Sigmoid showed UC at rectum, 2nd colonoscopy & Endoscopy 7/27/07, Left sided colitis and near cecum (mild)
8/1/08 on sulfasalazine 2 2x's a day, canasa often.

Possibly some probiotics to keep that good bacteria going while on the antibiotics. Why aren't you on UC meds? Even though you don't have blood, those meds are what usually help to keep you from having inflammation and blood-and keep you from flaring.

I agree. You should discuss maintenance medications with your doctor.

My doc gave me rx for oral and rectal mesalamine, then gave me instructions on how to vary the doses to control my symptoms so asking your gi how to use your medication to your best advantage might be advisable as well.

I always stopped my medications when I felt better and now I am stuck in a mild-moderate flare that doesn't want to go away and I blame my lack of compliance with my meds.

There was a time when I was on meds for 6 weeks, both and rectal, when I went back to the doc he was amazed when he did the sigmoid and said "the UC is gone, what did you do???" But here's the things when it was "gone, no ulcers showing" I was never having formed stool. Why aren't I having formed stool? It's been years! The reason why I'm not on meds, it seems like they make me worse, make me bleed, I feel like crap all the time on them! I wish meds came with no side effects :(

Oh I see what you mean. There seems to be a good number of people on the board here who have trouble tolerating some of the medication prescribed for UC. I'm sure they will be able to advise you.

When I started taking 12 asacol a day and rowasa, I had diarhea like I never had before. Not the sick kind, but just regular old D. I also had a lot of dizziness. I backed off the medication and then slowly worked my way back up and the D went away and I was better for a time.

Could you have ibs as well as Uc?

Curious, is it unusual to have uc at cecum and then nothing until the decending colon?

Is it possible that you have IBS in addition to the UC and the symptoms you're now having are IBS symptoms? Have you talked to your doctor about your current symptoms/concerns? If he or she thinks you may have IBS, there are meds for that and other options as well, including dietary changes. There is an active IBS forum here as well.
Diagnosed with UC March 2007; Asacol 4 tablets 3x/day; Rowasa; Canasa; Viactiv; Metamucil wafers; multivitamin; sublingual allergy drops
