Hi everyone!  Has anyone had any experience w/ being on antibiotics and getting your remicade infusion during the antibiotic treatment?  I am worried about it.  Remicade being an immuno suppressant and antibiotics taking out all the bacteria, I am worried about having no fighting power left!  I should mention that this is the third antibiotic that I've been put on for my upper respiratory infection/sinus infection......I was basically done the 1st one when it came back full force.  Was but on a 2nd one for 2 days but had GI side effects, really bad gas, bloatiness and D....After being on the 2nd one for 2 days, they switched me to Augmentin and I have 2 days left of that.  I am on Remicade every 8-9 weeks.  My appointment was for today but I postponed it until this Wed which would be exactly 9 weeks.  I am worried that coming off the antibiotic (still not that much better, I actually feel like I'm getting sick again) and getting the Remicade is just going to be bad.  ANyone have any advice or comments on this?  I just started taking Culterelle last week and take that once a day................

vb4girl, Glad you're doing well on the Remicade. How many infusions did you have so far, and how many did it take before you noticed less BM's and no diareah? My son started his Remicade on Dec 5. Gets his second on 12/19 and 3rd one 4 weeks later. So far he said he sees no change. Still goes a lot in morning, and feels urgency late afternoon. Doctor took him off his Asacol, but kept him on his 6MP for now,,3 50mg pills a day. I guess he will taper off later. He had no bad reaction at wll with the Remicade, but no big change... yet.. :-) He also just got a flu shot, and is fine. What did your doctor say about taking antibiotics on Remicade. Ok, later...

I've been on antiobiotics for my last two infusions...it's okay. As long as the infection is gone you should be good to go...try not delay your treatments too long! I keep getting staph infections and open wounds caused from the removal of abscesses...I'm sorry you keep getting sick. I take mucinex the second my nose starts to run. It is scary being on such a medication like Remicade, but it's nice to know I'm not the only one constantly battling infections and taking infusions at the same time.

I wish you luck!

Thanks for your reply RobinByrd. I saw a new Primary Care doctor last week and was suprised to find out that she is on Remicade too but for RA. So she understood all my concerns which is rare for a Primary Care doctor to understand our concerns about Remicade and other medications. Anyways, she made a good point that we are going to get the colds, infections that everyone else gets but since we are immuno compromised from our disease AND the Remicade, we are going to get sick more and the infections/colds will last longer than normal..............Makes a lot of sense but glad to have this forum to hear from people going through the same! I hope your treatment w/ Remicade continues to go well!

You definitely need to be on a good probiotic when you're taking antibiotics, even if you don't take one regularly. In people with IBD, antibiotics increase the risk of c. diff colitis; replacing the good bacteria can help prevent that.
