I'm new at all of this (diagnosed about a year ago) and I'm a little confused with the phases of UC. Let me explain:

How many phases of UC are there? It seems that there are three phases.

1) Remission, a.k.a. feeling "normal": formed bowel movement (bm) or as I like to put it the mythical "two loop poop", 1 bm per day

2) everyday UC: loose bm, but not diarrhea, no blood, little to no mucus, no abdominal pain, 1 to 3 bm per day

3) flare: diarrhea, very loose bm, mucus, blood, abdominal pain, cramping, etc, 3 to 8+ bm per day.

Does this sound right?

Ulcerative Pan Colitis since March 2008
Balsalazide 3 750MGROX - 3 x per day
Prednesone 2 occasions (hated it)
VLS#3 1 pack 3 x per day
I recently bought a new toilet seat :)

For me, your everyday Uc is my remission. I am never going to see "pre-Uc" days again probably due to the severity of my flares and length of time I've had this.

Sounds about right, but then I feel that, for me, I'll never be back to pre-UC days.  I am pretty well in remission and remission for me is the following:
1 - 3 movements a day - one formed the other D
Still have mild achey bottom and upper back legs
Still have mild cramping
Still have mild joint pain (this could be "Arthur")
Still watch what I eat
But this is just me w/ life w/ UC
Diagnosised 8/25/08 GRRR
Started flare mid-May/feeling better but still flaring
Canasa 2x a day
Multi Enzyme
Mega Probiotic
Fiber Wafer
Nictotine Patch
Fish Oil Pill
Multi Vitamin

I would detail the following phases

1) The remission phase

2) Disease incurred but not reported! In that your colon may be under attack but you might not have symptoms

3) Disease presenting with symptoms

4) Colon no longer under attack but the workings of your colon are undermined due to scar tissue.

5) Colon in healing process.

I suggest 4) and 5) are the stage that UCers are in for the longest time and that both are frequently confused with flaring as the bodily function is so undermined. Also food would play a major part on your symptoms in both phases.

Seems we all have different symptoms at different stages.  I went from several bloody D bm's (with urgency and cramping) a day to 1 to 3 solid formed bm's, little bloody mucous in at least one - something like Gigi - with aching bottom and thighs.  Also, gas and slight cramping.

I found out that when I was out of Align probiotic and took the Digestive Advantage the doc gave me samples I did WORSE!  Align has really made my bm's solid, formed and reasonable to deal with.  Doc appointment on Wednesday if we don't have a storm.  Proctofoam is just keeping the UC where it is - would be nice to get rid of more symptoms especially the blood.

Colonoscopy 10/28 showed only 2 cm. left to heal in rectum - going to try Proctofoam first.
Probiotic Align, Prilosec for GERD

Close to remission -spoke too soon!
