He told me that VSL#3 is a good idea and that he would prescribe the DS once I need it.

He also recommended a few strains based on clinical trials L. Reuteri and Saccharomyces boulardii. Reuteri has been shown to have anti-microbial effects while not harming good bacteria while the Boulardii dude was found to prevent C.Diff infection and helps with moderate UC and Chron's remission.

So I went out and bought Nature's Way Primadophilus Reuteri and Florastore - hopefully it does me some good.
Off of 5-ASA (6 years) and no symptoms since probiotics started.

I'm not sure that Florastor prevents c diff, but I do think that it helps prevent a relapse of a c diff infection. Apparently the yeast in Florastor competes with the c diff for nutrients, and if you are prone to c diff infections, this will help you to avoid another one. Another thing I like about Florastor is that it is safe to take with antibiotics. If you are going to take Florastor for an extended time, take a look into buying them off of eBay. You can get three boxes of 50 (or is it 60?) caps for less than $100, and that includes shipping costs. I'd probably still be taking Florastor except the VSL#3 has been helping me quite a bit. I can't afford two high end probiotics.

Good luck with the new pro-bs. Hopefully you'll be able to stay med free and in remission.

Have you ever had a c diff infection? It sounds like an epedemic when reading posts here on the HW forum, but it really isn't all that common unless you've been hospitalized. If you haven't, count yourself lucky. If you have been infected before, Florastor is a good probio to use. I'm pretty sure that my use of Florastor after a c diff infection prevented me from a relapse. Around 40% of people that have had c diff relapse within 12 months. I had one minor blip about 60 days after my infection was cleared up, and I've been c diff free since.
