So, I went to Baltimore this past weekend and had a wonderful time...the Steelers won! I haven't eaten much the past three or four days because my poor colon has been a mess, plus after a long weekend with hardly any sleep I am far too tired to keep running to the bathroom
Anyways, I come home to a house of sick family members. Step-dad has a stomach virus, little brother has an upper respiratory infection, and my mother appears to be getting the flu. Last March when I got the flu I ended up in the hospital for 2 weeks and quite frankly very, very close to a coma and who knows what else... sad. Needless to say, I hightailed it out of my house and am hiding out at my boyfriend's place until things clear up, but I feel as if I'm having a serious anxiety attack. I am so so terrified of getting sick like that again and I'm afraid that even 5 minutes in my house exposed me to the germs and that I'm doomed. I don't want to ruin another Christmas with this stupid UC. These medicines just mess with my WBC so badly--its not extremely low, but its not normal and I was just wondering if anyone has any ideas for good immune system boosting vitamins/supplements that I can take?

Don't have any miracle immune boosters out there but you can try drinking a lot of green tea.  Anything that has antioxidants in them.  I know how you feel.  With my low white count I am concerned this time of year too.  We were in church on Sunday and all these people around us were hacking and coughing.  Don't they have enough sense to stay home?  God will forgive them.  When it came time to shake hands (Catholic Mass), I didn't even turn around to the sickos behind me.  I even saw them wipe their noses with their hands..yuk!
     Do you take any probiotics?

Update 11/03/08...finally in remission!!  Hope I don't jinx myself.  Off the prednisone since 11/01/08...now see if I can stay off for longer than two weeks.  Other meds: 6MP (75 mgm), colazal (6 per day), Benicar and Toprol (high blood pressure meds), Probiotic (2 per day), fish oil capsule and multi-vitamin and calcium with vitamin D.

I know this is not comforting, but our doc. says to be careful with anything that describes itself as boosting your immune system. UC happens because of an already overactive immune system, and all the drugs you/we are on, are meant to suppress the immune system so that the inflammation says in check. No use activating what is already activatd and causing the trouble!
So, stay away from sickies, use sanitizer often, take your orange juice and vitamins, and hope for this to pass. Sorry for your pain.

Daughter,15 diagnosed 1-08 w/ UC .
Asacol, Prevacid, Flagyl, Prednizone 50mg, major flare, now off!, Hosp. four x this yr. Low residue diet still, an
6MP, Colazol ,horrible acne/moon for awhile- No more Pred, but 6mp isn't working. Cortafoam enemas 4xweek
Trying probiotics, fish oil, and Mangosteen for kicks.
update:
Had 3rd infusion of Remicade, and still on all of the other drugs, except Flagyl and Pred. Better, not healed. In a drug trial for children. In an 'iffy' state-- on a flare's edge.

I go all out with protecting myself from germs. My doctors gave me specific times to go to the grocery store and I avoid movie theaters. I've always been real freaked out by germs to begin with and I HATE my hands being dirty so I keep hand sanitizer present, at all times, and wash my hands more frequently that I should, probably on the verge of very compulsive. I've taken a Centrum multi-vitamin and it didn't really do anything and my other doctor recommended Tums with vitamin D, but I think that that is just for calcium since I've been on pred for so long. I'm at a loss, I hate feeling like this, like I don't even want to be around people...especially my family, but I just can't risk it, I hate being sick even more and the hospital even more than that!

I feel like my best bet at this point is to live in a plastic bubble, at the very least I'd have a cool story!

Vitamin D is good for immune system too unless you live on an island and are out in the sun alot. Cut out ALOT of sugars, as they decrease the immune system drastically for a time after consumption. Exercise is wonderful for immune system along with vitamin C and killing all that stress that you have. Sleep.... etc. Just mostly do the stuff you are suppose to do to stay healthy, and wash up like everyone else already mentioned.

Getting sick with a cold/flu naturally builds a stronger immune defense...many IBDers may get hit harder with cold/flu symptoms but bottom line is it still strengthens your immune system.

I am a big believer, as I think many others here are as well, that our immune systems are out of whack. It is all very complicated, with different proteins involved and inflammation as well. But modulating or regulating the immune system seems to make sense. This seems to be played out some of the recent studies out there. What does prednisone do, correct me pb if I am wrong, but doesnt it calm down the immune system and stop or reduce inflammation? (among other things)

Prednisone is a corticosteroid hormone (glucocorticoid). It decreases your immune system's response to various diseases to reduce symptoms such as swelling and allergic-type reactions. It is used to treat conditions such as arthritis, blood disorders, breathing problems, certain cancers, eye problems, immune system diseases (crohn's and ulcerative colitis) and skin diseases. I agree our immune system is out of whack, not necessarily over or under active or maybe it depends on each IBDer too, but from what I've always heard and read, getting cold and flus actually are good for the immune system in helping it become stronger...that's why people with no immune system for example could actually die from a simple cold or flu.
