Hi...I was Dx with UC a year and a half ago...the same week we found out we were pregnant.  : )  Our son is turning 1 soon, and my UC has yet to be in remission and is causing major issues.  I'm on Asacol (2400mg twice a day), prednisone (20mg, but I have been on 40mg practically this entire time), and have had 4 Remicade treatments...and we are now having them every 6 weeks instead of 8.  My GI talked with me about surgery the other day, and we're meeting with a surgeon the end of January.  The troubles we are currently battling is my immune system.  The middle of October I was hospitalized for a staph infection, which ended up being MRSA.  I had two absesses removed leaving open wounds in my heal and bicep.  Just last week another came up on my shoulder.  The wound on my bicep seems to be at a stand still, and the new wound on my shoulder is ridiculously painful.  It also had a staph infection, which I am still taking antibiotics for.  I feel a little better since my last Remicade treatment, but am very nervous about decreasing the prednisone.  Does anyone else have the same problem with absesses and immune system difficulties?  I am very sad that we have been struggling for so long, and the surgery is a pretty big option for us right now.  I would appreciate any guidance or information anyone may have.  I have a wonderful support system within mine and my husband's families, and we are all eager to learn about other's experiences and feelings regarding situations like mine.

It's very likely that all your health problems are caused by the immunosuppressants and prednisone. Once you have surgery and get rid of the toxic colon and the drugs your health should rebound to levels you haven't seen in the past 2 years. Surgery cured me of the other problems UC or the drugs gave me. Be sure to discuss these chronic problems with your surgeon too.

Oh you poor dear.  You sure are suffering.  Surgery sounds like it would be beneficial for you.  It is my understanding that surgery is a last ditch effort in dealing with this illness, but it has worked wonders for a lot of people.  about the abscesses.....whenever I am on prednisone, I always seem to get some kind of infection, usually tooth abscesses.

Update 11/03/08...finally in remission!!  Hope I don't jinx myself.  Off the prednisone since 11/01/08...now see if I can stay off for longer than two weeks.  Other meds: 6MP (75 mgm), colazal (6 per day), Benicar and Toprol (high blood pressure meds), Probiotic (2 per day), fish oil capsule and multi-vitamin and calcium with vitamin D.
