I went to see my GI yesterday and found out that my bloodwork shows that I have moderate enzyme activity and that I can probably tolerate Imuran.  My GI said that 85% of people have not problem with Imuran, 11% of people can probably take it and 3% of people should not take it.  I fall into the 11%.  I started taking it today and will have followup bloodwork in 2 weeks and then again 2 weeks later and again and again.

Anybody else out there fall into this category?  And if so were you able to continue taking Imuran once you started?  And if you were not able to continue on it what kind of side effects did you experience?  I really want it to work as I have been on Prednisone again since late October and I'm really ready to get off of it.  My GI is having me taper off the Prednisone while I begin the Imuran b/c he said it takes 6 - 8 weeks to take effect.

Please let me know what your experiences are good and bad!
TIA!

Been taking 6MP for five years now.  Does not keep me out of flares.  When I was admitted to the hospital in May my GI doctor took me off it because my pancreatic enzyme levels were extremely high.  At the end of my hospitalization (10 days) the enzyme levels had returned to normal.  My doctor put me back on the 6MP about a month later.  I was a little hesitant to start this med again but otherwise I would be taking prednisone forever.  As it was, it took seven months to get off the prednisone and the 6MP to "kick in" once more.  My WBC was down to 2.6 a few weeks ago and that has me concerned.  I go for another count in two weeks.  I cut down my 6MP to 50 mgm instead of the 75.

Update 11/03/08...finally in remission!!  Hope I don't jinx myself.  Off the prednisone since 11/01/08...now see if I can stay off for longer than two weeks.  Other meds: 6MP (75 mgm), colazal (6 per day), Benicar and Toprol (high blood pressure meds), Probiotic (2 per day), fish oil capsule and multi-vitamin and calcium with vitamin D.

When I initially started taking it I did experience a lot of hair loss however I was taking prednisolone aswell.  Once I stopped the prednisolone treatment the hair loss stopped aswell.  I read lots of posts about hair loss when people take imuran and it freaked me out one person said they were almost bald so you could imagine how I was feeling.  Although it seemed that I was losing lots of hair and my hair felt thinner, nobody noticed and as I said it did stop.  So just incase this happens to you don't worry.  Other than that I have had no side effects.

My hair is definitely thinning out and I had thin hair to start with.  Dr A....14.5 seems a little high for a white count.  The normal levels at the lab where I get my blood work done says 4.8 to 10.8 for WBC.  So you can see where I am quite concerned with a 2.6 level.

It is high. It dropped to 9.3 immediately after I started the azathioprine for one round of tests then went back up. Yeah 2.6 is pretty darned low. How about I give you some of mine and we can call it even?

smilewinkgrin      Sounds good to me.  I just worry about being around sick people because with that low of a white count, I won't have anything to fight off the germs!

GOOD MORNING... I STARTED IMURON AND WAS VERY EXCITED WITH THE POSSIBILITIES THAT I WOULD BE PART OF POPULATION WHO DOESNT GET NEG EFFECTED BY MEDS.... I TOOK IT FOR A WHOLE MONTH, THE FIRST TWO WEEKS I WAS FINE ALTHOUGH MY DOCTOR PRESCRIBED HEART BURN MEDICATION WHICH I TOOK TWICE DAILY AND REALLY DIDNT THINK I NEEDED.  I MISSED A DOSAGE OF THIS HEARTBURN MEDICATION AND WOW DID I UNDERSTAND WHY I WAS PRESCRIBED IT... I FELT A BURNING BY MY RIBS.... COULDNT SLEEP.... APPARENTLY WITH MY MISSING MY DOSAGE THAT ONE DAY..I DISRUPTED BY SYSTEM COMPLETLY AND HAD TO TAKE HEART BURN MED OR STOMACH ACID MEDICATION.. FORGOT NAME SORRY... THREE TIMES A DAY UNTIL IT WENT AWAY.. I HAD NEVER FELT SUCH A DISCOMFORT....I STARTED THINKING IS THIS IMURON WORTH IT IF I MUST TAKE THIS HEART BURN MEDICATION AS WELL,  I ACTUALLY STARTED THINKING I WAS DAMAGING MY STOMACH WITH IMURON.  A WEEK PASSED AND HEART BURN CEASED.  DURING MY FOURTH WEEK, I STARTED FEELING WEIRD PAIN IN MY LEFT AREA OF MY ADOMEN.  PLEASE TRUST THESE FEELINGS AS SEE YOUR DOCTOR ASAP.  I TRIED TO IGNOR IT FOR A WEEK, THEN CALLED MY DOCTOR WHO TOLD ME TO STOP MEDICATION.  I WENT FOR BLOODWORK AND FOUND THAT MY LIVER WAS INFLAMMED.  MY DOCTOR WAS ABLE TO COMPARE BLOODWORK I TOOK BEFORE I STARTED IMURON AND THE NEW BLOODWORK AND CONCLUDED IT WAS MOST LIKELY DUE TO IMURON.  I TOOK BLOOD WORK TWO WEEKS AFTER I STOPPED IMURON AND LIVER INFLAMMATION WAS LESS.
MY ADVISE TRUST WHAT YOU FEEL AND ENSURE THAT YOUR DOCTOR MAKES YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE FOR YOU TO CALL HIM WHENEVEER YOU FEEL WEIRD.  MY DOCTOR IS GREAT..I AM USUALLY HESITANT IN CALLING DOCTORS FOR ANYTHING... BUT WITH THIS MEDICATION I HAD TO GET OVER THAT HESITATION.  MY DOCTOR WAS ALSO GREAT WITH TAKING BLOOD WORK CONSTANTLY, BUT IF YOUR DOCTOR IS NOT... I HOPE YOU COULD FEEL COMFORTABLE IN DEMANDING IT.
I WISH YOU THE MOST OF LUCK AND HOPE THIS MEDICATION WORKS WELL FOR YOU
AND PLEASE TRUST YOUR FEELINGS AND ANY PAIN  :)

BEST OF LUCK

i have been on prednisone over a year now (steroid dependant) and my doctor had originally put me on 6MP to try and get me off of it. ended up becoming toxic for me and my liver was shutting down. He ended up switching me over to Imuran before moving on to Remicade. I have been on Imuran for 2 weeks so far and i have not had any side effects yet. I go tuesday for my blood work so we shall see how my body tolerates this. Hope this works for you, i hate prednisone.
