I have read differing views on taking probiotics. Some people say you would stick with L.Acidophilus ONLY probiotics and other people take pills with mixed strains. What do you guys recommend?

I have these in the fridge but I am not sure if they are acceptable:
Probiotic Live Cells: L. rhamnosus, S. thermophilus, B. breve, L. acidophilus, B. infantis, B. longum, L. plantarum, L. salivarius, L.helveticus.

Should I try something else?

check out what Im taking. 18 different strains and close to 500 billion per day. If you ask me, the more the better in both strain diversity and number.

There are many strains that have been shown to be beneficial with IBD icluding acidophilus, thermophilus, boulardii, plantarum, reuteri, rhamnosus, casei, bulgaricus and salivarius

I would advise to take as much as your wallet can afford.
Off of 5-ASA (6 years) and 1-day minor flareup since probiotics started.

Probiotics 18 strains (vsl#3 + N.F. Ultimate multi probiotic + Trophic Acidophilus Plus + Nature's Way P. Reuteri + Florastore S. Boulardii) - 500 billion per day. No sugar, Oatmeal in the morning.
L-glutamine, elm powder, vit b & folic acid, 5 g vitamin C, vit D, vit E, Calcium+Magnesium

That one looks really good, 14 strains and has almost all the strains that crazytrain is talking about. I would buy that product and try it, but it needs to be refrigerated... I can't buy from vitacost because of that :( I live in PR and the shipping is not overnight. I buy my vitamins at vitacost.

I don't know if they sell it at VitaBase but they ship their probiotics wrapped in a cooling gel packet. I don't see it on their site but they have:
I am going to email them and ask about MegaFlora. Primal Defense looks similar.

There's some debate about formulations with multiple strains losing effectiveness as the strains may compete with each other, but the bottom line is experiment and see what product works for you. I've almost always used multiple strain formulas and feel they're generally a better bet because different strains are effective in different areas of the digestive system or have slightly different functions. Some strains are transient while some colonize. Seems like it's best to cover your bases with a variety. I've never read where l. acidophilus alone was recommended.
Diagnosed with ulcerative colitis spring 1999.

Maintenance dose sulfasalazine.
Probiotics, l-glutamine and fish oil caps. George's aloe vera juice. Oregano oil antibiotic, antiviral, antifungal. Long-term remission with only minor blips.

Interesting princesa, regarding multiple strains and competing with each other. Never thought of that before.

I take multiple strains too...some that can be taken with food, the others no matter or better on an empty stomach.

It's definitely trial and error, and I would think that we all can vary in the needs of different strains at different times.

Prior I actually had a flare so it was active, but it was not bad at all compared to the flares people mention in this forum in terms of amount and symptoms.

No, I dont think so unless something changed since my last colonoscopy. Megaflora Optim would be worth checking out if you say its got reuteri too, I havent seen anything except nature's way with it.
