I'm having a mild flare and my doc put me on Prednisone 20mg to taper down by 5mg on a weekly basis. I asked if I should continue the Asocal 4 pills three times per day and he told me yes. I guess that I don't understand? That is what I was taking while my flare started and it obviously was not working so why wouldn't he have me stop for a while til the steroid kicks in, then start taking it again to see if it will help maintain my remission?

Both do different things, and it's hopeful that the asacol can be continued to do its thing once the pred has done its thing. Not clear, I know.

Have you been on 12 asacol continually or just increased as of late?

Why are you alternating the steroid and 5ASA enemas? When did that start?

You're also on a low dosage of Pred...the doc is just hoping to lower the inflammation response enough....what's the tapering process for the pred?

I have been on it continuously.

My doc has had me do it before but did not suggest it now. Don't know why?

Lower 5 mg per week. for 5 weeks.

Pred is considered a booster med to help a med like asacol kick in or at least offer some relief (temporarily) until the asacol does kick in.

I'm not on any rectal meds right now. My doc just said to use the asocal and the prednisone. Maybe he is assuming that I will use the enemas since he has perscribed them in the past. I am getting the feeling from the posts that I should start using them. I have the Mesmaline (sp) and Hydrocort enemas.

Hi..I would suggest you use them...but maybe since you're on pred, start using them closer to the end of your tapering from pred (since you might need them more then than now and you're on a 5 week taper of pred anyway).

I've never been on pred, and I'm basing the suggestion on when most people are having some flare symptoms when tapering.

My take is that you should have been put back on the rectal meds before even considering the pred (since you mention mild flare.
I'm biased, however, and with some flares it takes a while for the rectal meds to do their thing.

When you were on the 30 days of enemas...did your doc have you just stop them or taper off?

It takes a while to get the meds all figured out.

Hope you feel better soon!
