Hi everybody!

I'm back again with my continuing flare... I've been flaring now for almost 2 months straight.. I've been using Rowasa 1 time at night and Canasa 2 suppositories in the am and now my Dr. is adding Lialda to the mix, 2 pills 2x a day.... Has anyone here had positive effects from Lialda.. I need to hear the positive and maybe a LITTLE negative, but mostly positive... lol... I've always been able to keep my U/C at bay pretty much, but not anymore.. this flare has a hold of me but good... Also, another problem I'm having is nausea before having a poopie...  It's like as the poopie passes through my colon, I get nauseaus and as soon as it's all out, I start feeling better, but boy, sometimes it's so bad I almost puke and feel like I'm having an anxiety attack.. it's HORRIBLE... is this also common?? In my past few flares, I never had that happen like it is now.. Argh.. I thought I was going to be one of the lucky ones who can keep it under control with minimal effort.. ugh.. lol...

Oh and a nice discovery... since I can't drink milk anymore.. I started drinking that stuff called "Silk" it's soy milk and has a SLIGHT hint of vanilla flavoring.. very good to use in cereal or just to drink.. No lactose and is verrrry easy on my stomach.... I can now enjoy hot chocolate and I haven't been able to have a decent cup of that for a few years.. (always used hot water.. icky and not creamy at all...)

(Hey Quincy!!! how's it hangin???  Love, Wilma... HA HA... ) I'll never forget that turkey leg... ugh... lol

No remission no more.. lol.. Flaring now for 2 months. Blood and mucus and cramps.. argh!!! Meds are Rowasa, Canasa and now Lialda 2 pills 2x a day Culturelle 1x a day, plus an occasional Xanax if I feel stressed out.... Ambien at night for sleep... geez..

Hi Wilma!!!...sucks you're still feeling crappy, however, it's good the doc has finally put you on an oral 5ASA....4 daily is a high dosage to start...Hope it helps.

Did the nausea begin after starting the Lialda?  I do get nausea with flaring...you should get back on the Bentyl and maybe consider to try something like Dramamine (I think that's what's in the US).  I use a half Gravol..same stuff..the higher dosage gives me the heebie geebie legs (like restless legs).

I'm coming out of a flare (yep, upped the butt meds again) plus my 3rd cold this fall/winter. Totally ticked off since all 3 have affected the larynx and this one is the most coughing of all. My husband graciously gifted me his for Christmas...so, I missed the Christmas get-together. No matter, better being home and quiet because there's no way I can be quiet around other people..haha!

Good thing you're staying away from those turkey legs...ugh, perish the thought!

Hope you were able to salvage a good holiday celebration even though you were feeling lousy.

Keep us posted as to how the oral meds work for you.

quincy xx

Hey Q~!! Nice to hear from you :)

I'm doing ok, the holidays were ok, I spent this last weekend with my Son in Los Angeles which is where I posted from.. the Valencia Hyatt.. .Nice place but a bottle of water cost 3.50~! I almost fell of the bed when I saw that.. lol... My son is on leave from the Army.. he's stationed in MD at Aberdeen Proving Ground so he's glad to be in LA right now where the weather is nice and sunny.. cool, but sunny... He goes back on Jan 4th to finish school then he's back home for a month before shipping of someplace for a long term assignment probably.

The nausea was actually before the Lialda, my GI actually just prescribed it to me last Friday so I am starting to take it tonight. I didn't want to start it while I was in LA in case it made me feel worse at first. I live in Northern CA and didn't want to have any complications while making the 6 hour drive home which I did today, I was already uncomfortable enough... As for the dosage, I thought 4 pills a day was sorta high, but oh well, maybe after a month or two I can taper down to just 2 a day.. All I know is that I've never had a flare last this long and been this hard to get to settle down.

Also this year I've had 2 colds... I NEVER get colds~! I haven't had a cold in something like 4 years and this year I've had 2 already. I wonder if it's because I'm flaring so my body is more suseptable (I can't spell that word)

Anyhoo.. I'll let you know how the Lialda effects me, my GI Said there's virtually NO Side effects so we'll see...

Glad to hear you are hanging in there and nice to "see" you again!!

Hi Susie....it's been a tough year for you, so it would have you a bit off I would think.

Do keep away from those bronto legs!!! ;-)

Keep us posted about the Lialda.

Oh, you could start with one pill twice daily and see if that improves you.

When you were on Asacol..how many did you take before?

Hey Q, that's just it.. I've never been on oral 5ASA's before, only rectal meds... Rowasa and Canasa... Remember when I left my hubby and went to Montana last year from October thru December with just me, my horse and dog?? I actually got into a remission that lasted almost a year and was med free.. the entire time. Then, since moving back down to Nothern CA with my Bi-Polar husband.. (at least that's MY diagnosis.. lol) I've been flaring now and can't get it back in control... Things haven't changed much where hubby is concerned, he actually asked me for a divorce while I was down in LA visiting my son this last weekend, but that same night, changed his mind and wanted me home...(hence the bi polar diagnosis on my part.. lol) Now he promises to get counseling and see someone for anger management, and also to go to Church with me 2 times a week.. Ya.... I'm not holding my breath, we'll see what happens, but if the next month is the same ol' crap, I feel the end is really near now. I've been putting up with his behavior for 9 years and it's definately taken it's toll on me healthwise... Plus, I'm sure it's changed me as a person also, I am not the same girl he married for sure.. in the baginning I wouldn't fight back, but that's not the case now... You just get tired of putting up with it ya know? You get to a certain point and all you want to do is fire back and get it off your chest since you can't take it in anymore, which I'm sure doesn't help, but I'm not a doormat anymore at least.

WOW, I didn't think my reply was going to go THERE.. LOLOL... At least you know my history and can understand what I'm talking about.

As for the Lialda, I was thinking about starting at 1 pill 2x a day and see what happens. I'm afraid it might make me worse at first so I thought about tapering UP instead of down to see how it's going to effect me.

This will be my first time taking oral meds... wow.. I thought that would never happen.... lol...

Well, it's good the doc finally put you on the oral 5ASA...that took a while (wow, didn't realise it's been 3 years since you came on board).

My doc would increase from a lower dosage rather than start at the top. Diarrhea and other UC-like symptoms are experienced by some...it would be counterproductive to have both symptoms if after a short period they didn't improve. I did get worse before I got better, but the meds don't work immediately....but I started off at 4 Asacol daily and increased to 6. I'd strongly start at 2 Lialda and increase by one at a time if you needed to..

Are you still on the Rowasa nightly?

I won't comment too much on the husband situation except to say that you have to consider personal self-preservation and your future. It's not an overnight revelation to change and the journey when stressed will have one revert to the easiest and most comfortable reaction. If he is indeed bi-polar....your role in his actions has to be put into the equation.

I hope therapy helps...but ultimately, it should be for the individual and how it can affect each other...sometimes it's best to go separate ways. That's not a failure if self-worth and independence and moving forward is a result.

Do take care....

If you would do me a favour, I'd love it. if you're able to get out on a ride on a sunny day, no wind, onto a soft dry dirt road (don't know what it's like where you are) or in the freshly fallen snow at a real slow lope...that sound is awesome....Drink in the air and say "this one's for you Heather"....

Keep me posted as how you're doing.

H xx

Heather.... not sure what kind of ride you are talkin about... but I took sometime this afternoon and saddled up my old mare and went for a quick ride around the farm. Was a nice day here ( in the 40's ) It was wonderful. Just her and I and I didn't have to tie her to a tree while I pooped or nothing. Was a very enjoyable hour or two. Nothing seems to put me "right" like that. Saw a few deer, enjoyed the scenery and weather. was a nice aftenoon.

Yes....horseback riding is what I meant..Susie has a few horses. Thought I should hop a virtual ride! I haven't gone for a very long time since I owned two horses oh so long ago. We rode all year round...was awesome!
To afford the board now-a-days is a bit beyond what I'd like to spend, and I don't have the time to enjoy it. I'm waiting for the lotto win..haha!

Happy to hear you enjoyed your ride and didn't have to make any stops....it can truly settle the soul, although not the butt if it's in some distress.lol!

Hope tomorrow is a good day for you...thanks for sharing!
